Trump's Second Term

So US democracy is now a single man ruling by decree with a rubber stamp house and congress, with a few favoured cronies getting to whisper in his ear?

Congratulations, you have re-instated royal rule with a court of new aristocracy who are dependent on the president-king for their power. LouisXIV would be proud.

I was absolutely sure it was going to be one of those cases where someone takes a photo of someone waving to a crowd and happens to get a moment when it's at exactly the right (or wrong) angle, but it was totally not that. He really put some effort into it.
Worth noting he did it twice. The second time with less conviction, granted, but he still did it.

Why the eff did ESPN give Trump five minutes to talk during the national championship game? I could see if he was going to talk about football and hard work, instead it came off as an ad for all the wonderful things he's going to do now that he's been re-elected. One of my Trump-supporting friends even questioned what the point was.

One amusing bit--he talked about how America hasn't been great for decades, apparently forgetting the halcyon Olympiad he presided over.

Yep. All those years of neglect that included his own first term. Everyone is too afraid of him to state the obvious.

"Trump is literally Hitler, but what really gets us is that he's gonna rename Denali." :D
No. That and the Gulf of Mexico indicate someone with an inability to think rationally and focus. He's like a child playing with matches except he's the president of the most powerful country in the history of the world.

And to think I was soundly told off for comparing the Trump administration to a monarchy.

Man, are you behind the times. Trump winning was the end of Democracy, don't you know. This was the final US election.
You act sarcastic, but my fear is that Trumpism seeks to implement Russian style democracy. You can vote, just as long as you vote for his party.
Earlier you rightly claimed people voted for Trump because they agreed with his promises. From where I sit it seems clear Trump and his cronies have no interest in keeping any of those promises except for those favouring billionaires.

You're right, I think that's completely silly.

"Saving Democracy" was a big meme among the Democrats and their supporters when it meant voting for Kamala. Don't you remember that?

But now that the voters have chosen Trump, democracy is called populism and they don't seem as interested in saving it.

Same goes for deporting illegals who have committed crimes. And overwhelming proportion of the voting public wants it. Therefore, deportations are a great way to save democracy!!
Yes, a lot o neo-nazis are fond of calling their ani-democratic fantasies democracy.

Actually if you look at all the popular progressive channels, all you hear about is the need for a populist liberal candidate. But Trump obviously did not win in a pure 'democratic' sense, the popular vote was basically tied, and only a third of the electorate voted for him, so not even a near majority. So I think it's a stretch to say "voters chose Trump"--more accurately, Trump won by the rules in a quasi-democratic system.
I have zero doubt that the majority of Americans do not want Trump as President, and that number will likely soar in the next 100 days.
The big caveat is that Trump will do his best to create basically a state controlled media, and to persecute any opposition. If he succeeds, it will be as big a challenge to determine his true popularity as it is determining Putin's current popularity among Russians.
And that was in a system rigged to maximise Trampy's vote and minimise Harris'.
