It's a variation on the Salem Hypothesis. Physicians are not, with rare exceptions, actual scientists; they're medical engineers who don't have the training and mentality for experimental work and tend to over-estimate their own expertise and intelligence.
Off on a tangent, the Hero System tabletop RPG distinguishes between Professional Skills and Knowledge Skills. One gives you the ability to perform a task and earn a living while the other gives you the background theoretical knowledge. How to do something vs. how something works. An example in one of the books is that someone with PS: Plumbing can fix a broken pipe but may not know anything about fluid mechanics.
EDIT: A more real world example, people taking general medical advice from a cardiac surgeon because he's "a doctor". (Oz)
