Perfectly normal stuff.

(But hey, Jen O'Malley Dillon said a word starting with F, so that's both sides, right?)

USA rots.

Is USA right now rotten enough for Trump to pull off coup of any kind? Probably not, especially considering Trump's infinite omniincompetence.

Is whole brouhaha severely weakening what passes for democracy in USA? Yes. Yes. Thousand times yes.

Second time will be charm. Or third. Unlike other side, they have to succeed only once.

Fools that dismiss current idiocy as no big deal do it at their own peril.

I agree. At the very least, there will be more competent people watching this ******** and wondering what lessons they can take from it.

1.) Never concede.
2.) Get some governors and state legislators on board.
3.) Voter suppression tactics can be improved

etc....

I couldn't have a lower opinion of all these "patriots" who for years woke up each morning fearing that Obama might declare Marital Law and now can't wait for Trump to do so.

4.) State Legislatures will devise creative systems for the allocation of Electors, for example by allowing the Legislatures to intervene after the elections.
Given the asinine system of lame duck legislatures, there is zero risk in doing so. (I'm actually amazed it hasn't happened yet.)

Well, this is the thing. For the most part, things run smoothly enough because it is understood what is supposed to happen from X to Y to Z.

People follow the precedent which is essentially what a consititution is (and yeah yeah to all those who are like "ours is written so you can't break the rules!"), but the moment that you start deliberately pushing at the cracks and realizing that "Hey it says nothing about this..." then you find yourself in trouble. Then, who is going to save the day? The Supreme Court? Oh wait a minute... But then, even if they do, we get back to the whole, "Chief Justice Marshall has made his judgment; now let's see him enforce it!" problem.

Indeed.

And anyone who thinks the stage isn't being set for ongoing violence is a fool complete moron. As we've seen here repeatedly... What the president says doesn't matter. He's entitled to his opinions like everyone else. Ya sure.

Yes, because if anything, we should trust the party that was A-OK with Russia interfering in the 2016 election, regularly engages in voter suppression, gave a free pass to Trump when when he tried to blackmail Ukraine into fabricating a Biden scandal, and contains more members who have caught Covid19 than have publically accepted Biden's victory.

I mean, just because they have failed to stand up against trump and have shown a lack of integrity every time, I am sure THIS time it will be different.

It's not about integrity, it's about self-preservation. If they actually attempt to abandon law and the Constitution, then they've lost something bigger than an election. I don't think they have a hope of stopping Biden's inauguration regardless of what stupid crap Trump pronounces, and they know this as well as anyone. It's not a viable plan.

The GOP dingleberries will keep clinging to Trump out of self-interest, but I don't think this extends to political suicide.

What political suicide? What law and order? What constitution?

The republicans have been wiping their bottoms with the constitution for years, and what did they get? 4 years with trump able to enrich millionaires and cram through right wing judges, and even after all the scandals their presidential candidate still got over 40% in the popular vote, increased their house representatives, and may have held on to the senate.

Republican politicians don't care about law and order or the constitution, and the MAGAchuds like it that way. They could stand by while Trump attempts to have himself anointed king, with the knowledge that even if it fails to work, the republican base will still support them.

This.

We are seeing a dry run of a coup. Plenty of people are looking at the points where they failed and are considering how to get their people into those positions. We'd be in a very different place right now if Georgia had a more pliant Secretary of State or Pennsylvania had weaker willed leaders in their legislature.

Again I'm overjoyed that Trump has thrown enough dirt on America's grave that the people sitting on the sideline for years polishing up their dancing shoes can now finally dance on it.

"Martial law" basically means that the military takes control, and in the US it is accompanied by suspension of habeas corpus rights. Basically, the military is in charge and they can lock up anyone they like without having to give a reason for doing it.

Here's a wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_law_in_the_United_States

Invoking martial law for the purposes of re-running an election or for refusing to surrender the symbols of authority, i.e. refusing to leave the White House, or refusing to acknowledge the authority of the new President would be illegal, and the new President could have Trump arrested.

In which case, the winner is the one with the most guns. Democracy only exists so long as the leaders abide by the law.
The president also cannot invoke martial law for any old reason. He has to declare why he is doing it, and if it doesn't fall within the reasons enumerated, it's a crime. He could be impeached and removed from office.....by anyone who has enough guns.

And I think that Trump would command very few guns. I think he would give the order and the response would be that that is an illegal order and it will not be followed, or possibly result in an immediate arrest. It depends on what the people holding the guns say.

I also think that even Trump isn't crazy enough to try it, but I've been surprised before.

And who stopped him when he used "national security concerns" to impose punitive tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum? "National security concerns", really.

Trump attempting to initiate Martial Law, and the military saying "Meh, no thanks" would be the ultimate humiliation, and a perfect ending for his pathetic administration.

I'd almost like to see it, though it'd still be a bad moment for the country.

So what happens if POTUS declares martial law?

If he does, who implements it?

It is well past time for Pence and the cabinet to start the 25th amendment process of declaring trump unable to perform his duties. Not that I have the least bit of confidence that Pence or a majority of the cabinet will do it, nor that enough Republicans in Congress would support it to get the necessary 2/3 in both houses.

No one does, that's who.

That's the crux of Trump's problem. You can't just wave a magic wand. If the armed forces won't do it, who will?

There is also the tiny problem that, as of 12:00 ET on Jan. 20, Trump is no longer commander in chief. At that time. Biden can cancel any orders Trump has given.
