Trump's Coup d'état.

Did you mean that "regular way" to be the same "regular way" as this?

No. I meant regular majority vote in Congress, as opposed to the special "one vote per state" vote that occurs in case of voting for President.

Some of the clowns that held "alternate elector" meetings yesterday are doing things aimed at the Electoral Count Act of 1887. First, they are going to drop their votes in the mail, or carry them on horseback or something, so that they can claim there were two sets of votes received from Michigan, so it's ok to vote to object to the votes. Second, they are saying that obviously, since the vote for President in the House of Repreresntatives is one vote per state, the vote to object to electoral votes ought to also be that way.

It's utter nonsense, of course. It's another case where we have to figure out if they are delusional, stupid, planning a coup under the veneer of legality, just plain trolling, or doing some sort of fund-raising scam to bilk the gulllible.

Also,
But, operationally, it can be any old objection, with enough obfuscation and/or lying, because there is no one nor any process empowered to prevent it.

Since it's a law, the courts are empowered to interpret it. The law says that the Congress can't object to electoral votes that are regularly given, and the courts can decide what that means - in theory.

All of these procedures assume a group of people acting in good faith, which will almost certainly not be the case if the procedures of the law are ever utilized.

I would have thought that a State could argue that since it had submitted its Electoral Votes in exactly the same way for (say) 40 years, and there had never been an objection in the past, that 40 years of submitting same in good faith and with them being accepted is precedent, so the votes were regularly given.

Today, for the first time in months, I did not get a call from the Trump campaign.

Yeah.

I doubt we'll ever see it used. It has to be one representative and one senator, and Mitch McConnell told senators not to object today, so there won't be a challenge, I would guess.

I think the ploy would be that they were not regularly given, because they were a result of massive fraud. What that means is that they have to charge that the state election officials were incompetent in detecting fraud, or complicit in committing it.

All things considered, it isn't going to happen.

I think Mitch knows all too well that the GOP will be taken out and shot or something if they persist with any more Trump-style objections. Having exhausted the patience of dozens of courts up to and including SCOTUS, been made fun of globally due to the unhinged Giuliani and the Kraken, having the EC threatened by their own blithering idiots, and all the while having to kowtow to the insane Mango Mussolini, while hundreds of thousands are sick and dying due to their intransigence in government...it might actually be time to allow that the US public have had enough of them after all.

i think it's a case of Mitch realzing that the Trumpsters are, long term, driving the GOP off the cliff, and he is trying to take the driving wheel back. Might be too late for that.
ANyway, It will be ineresting to see how Trump raacts to what Donnie has to see as a betrayal.

A very conservative Congressman also quit the GOP yesterday
That's two in the last few days.
Paul Mitchell was one... who was the other congress critter that quit?

(As I pointed out earlier, his 'resignation' was pretty pathetic... Mitchell didn't run for re-election so he's only going to sit as an independent for a few weeks. And for the last 4 years, he has remained a republican as Trump called neo-nazis "fine people", asked a foreign government to interfere in the election, and watched Trump demolish any and all political norms.)

It's much simpler: Trump is taking all the donations that would otherwise have gone to the RNC.

I was a little dismayed on FB today when a Republican acquaintance, who despite being a strong Trump supporter had showed signs of rationality from time to time, ran with a bit where Trump might tweet "The Storm is Upon Us" and that's supposed to activate some kind of insurgency. Equally disturbing was that all of his dozens of replies were people supportive and saying they were ready and wanted in.

I don't think this necessarily started from any plan of Trump's, but I also feel like if he heard it he'd tweet it out anyway just to stir the ****. I'm not existentially worried for the country, but I feel like there will be some violence. :(

Simple FBI operation: use FB and other pipelines to the Q/MAGA crowd to call for getting people registered for Trump' Milita and asign jobs/weapons according to skills.

Do a background check on anyone who shows up, arrest as appropriate.

.

Horseback. I like it.

I was thinking the same thing when I read that Putin and McConnell congratulated Biden. A very conservative Congressman also quit the GOP yesterday

That's two in the last few days.

So did the Majority Whip. I believe the dam is busting on this.

All my search turns up is Paul Mitchell. Who else?

I believe they are only referring to people who have congratulated Biden.
(I got confused too.)

It was Paul Mitchell I was thinking of. Sorry for the confusion.
