Organised crime, Russians, the New York luxury property business - wouldn't it be bizarre if there was an overlap?

Then there are the rumors...dating back well before Trump started his political career, from his New Jersey Casino days, of his involvement with a certain Italian American Fraternal Organization......

Hey, any good con man will tell you that coming off as a "straight shooter" is just about the first thing a good con man needs to master.

But that's what I don't get. He has NEVER appeared to me to be a straight shooter. In fact his non stop exaggeration comes off to me as a flashing warning sign that this guy is full of crap.

The only time he appears remotely sincere is when he's being an *******.

Perhaps related: the folks who voted for him really wanted an ******* in charge, for some reason.

I guess the simple truth of the matter is that there are a huge number of idiots that are super easy to con. Just say anything, especially if it is something they want to believe, and sound confident while doing it and they will believe it.

Now you're being disingenuous.
Not really. I may be communicating poorly.

What I find stunning is not that Trump is a compulsive liar but that so many people dismiss his lying as trivial and irrelevant.
You can assert that he is a compulsive liar, but that doesn't make it so. Most of the things he lies about do seem to be trivial and stupid.

I think it says more about them and not Trump. Rationalizing bad behavior is not the key to anything good.
People are tribal and will inevitably rationalise for their own side. Very few people have the time to look into any of this stuff at anything but the most surface level.

Do you have children?
Yes

Do you think it is trivial when they lie to you?
Depends on the circumstances. Generally not, but then the circumstances are very different. You seem to be labouring under the mistaken belief that I think Trump is a good, psychologically normal person. I don't think a normal person is likely to make it through the mud you need to wade to to become President. I expect all politicians at that level to lie when it is pragmatic to do so.

My guess is that if you were brought up in the kind of household I was your parents wouldn't stand for that behavior.
My upbringing wasn't particularly strict, but honestly... if I wanted my children to battle their way to a position like Trump's, I would be raising them very differently and probably wouldn't like them half as much.

Hmm. Listened to a good amount of the McCabe. I found his answers somewhat reassuring. He WANTED to rip Trump and was very eager to answer question rephrasing that allowed him to blast away (paraphrase):

Q: Did you ever hear Comey tell Trump he wasn't under investigation?
A: I cannot comment on that..

Q: Is it common practice for the FBI to notify someone when they aren't the subject of an investigation.
A: No, it's *********** really, really weird. It would be super strange if it happened...

Also, the Republicans question McCabe were kind of going after Trump. I'm not optimistic yet, but it is interesting. The momentum seems to have shifted...

I wish I could find it, but I saw something a month or so ago that said something like

In a just world, Trump would be selling used Hyundais in an empty lot and Gannon would be out front dressed in a weiner costume, spending his lunch breaks masturbating in the bathroom in the Arbys across the street.

The image and mode of communication he uses has been hugely successful for him. I don't know to what extent it is true or useful to call it compulsive.
Or he has been successful because that lying behavior has other benefits in other settings, like conning Trump University recruits.

But when you take him out of that setting and see he cannot adapt. Not only that but he's under the microscope and the compulsive reactions to every slight are very problematic for him, such as the interview today and the addition of the "you told me I wasn't under investigation' which did not need to be in the Comey letter.

See enough of it and that's when you can say it is compulsive. It is useful because you can predict the behavior will continue and can be dangerous to the country.

Except that he has given half a dozen other versions of how the decision was made. Why are we picking this version as the truth and the others as false? The multiple contradicting statements are part of his Teflon coating.

Leaks have made it clear that Trump decided to fire Comey because he refused to be Trump's lackey. And that version makes way more sense.

The vast majority of people lack the time and inclination to form an informed opinion about politics and tend only to consume media from their own camp except for snippets of opposing opinion selected by their own side to mock. Trump has discovered a new way to game this system.

Apparently Kelly Ayotte (just lost her NH Senate seat) is a contender to FBI director.

I kinda doubt that Trump will pick her though. She claims she didn't even vote for him.

It is very obvious that Trump is a liar.

People that fell for his con job are dumb.

GOP Congress will let him get away with the impeachable offense. They need to take away voting rights from minorities and cut taxes for the rich after all. Priorities.

The used car salesman's maxim: "The most important thing is honesty. Once you can fake that, you’ve got it made."
