Cont: Today's Mass Shooting (2)

Again, whoever is doing the killing, there are far too many of them in the USA. And you won't even try to address the main reason for this, the easy availability of firearms to all your population which will, of necessity, include white supremacists, people of colour, political factions, heck even people just having one bad day. I don't care what colour or what political viewpoint a shooter takes, I would just like efforts made to stop it before more innocents like school kids get killed by anyone of any background.

Sadly there is an entire political wing of this country who feels that the occasional school-child massacre is an acceptable trade for a protected right to own and use firearms.

That isn't a strawman or a pejorative extrapolation, by the way; not some "so then you must think..." gotcha. Many of them will explicitly concede that while they don't really like to hear it framed that way, it is true.

In the wake of Uvalde, at least this time, to judge by their response, the police seemed highly-skilled, well-trained and effective.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Interim Chief Mike Sack said a call came in from the high school for an active shooter at 9:11 a.m. and officers arrived on scene four minutes later. They located the shooter eight minutes after arriving on scene, engaging in a gunfight and securing him. “While on paper we might have nine victims, eight who were transported and one remained, we have hundreds of others,” Sack said earlier. “Everyone who survived here is going to take home trauma.” NBC News report

According to the police the parents of the St. Louis shooter did everything within their power to prevent a tragedy, including reporting him to the police, having guns removed from the house, and providing him with regular (and at times compulsory) mental health treatment. They screened his mail and searched his room regularly for weapons or indications of plans. But all of their efforts were thwarted, thanks to a culture in the United States that promotes violence as the most aspirational form of agency and considers it a patriotic duty to make sure a gun can find its way into the hands of anyone who wants one regardless of intent.

Police are now saying that the gun used for the shooting was the one previously removed from the gunman's home by police at the request of his family.

The family doesn't know how he originally obtained the gun; however, they called the police who initially confiscated it, and then released it to a "responsible third party" known to the family who stepped up for that purpose.

The police have said that it is "presently unknown how" the firearm got from the custody of that Responsible Adult back into the hands of shooter; but pragmatically speaking the only two plausible scenarios are that either the shooter stole it back, or the Responsible Adult, despite knowing the circumstances in which it was taken away from the would-be shooter, decided themselves to give it back voluntarily.

The second scenario is the most likely, in my biased opinion, because many gun advocates categorically reject the notion that people being "dangerous", making explicit threats, or being mentally ill can ever justify taking guns away from them (e.g., the parents of the Oxford High School mass shooter), to the point where they will sometimes willingly help subvert any such measures. I suspect that may be the case here.

But Chicago!

14 wounded, including a 3, 11 and 13-year-old, in a drive-by shooting during a vigil.

Sounds like a really nice neighborhood.
The block of three-flats where 14 people were shot Monday night — including three kids — is so rife with violence that drivers have been seen throwing their cars into reverse down the one-way street after being waved away at gunpoint.

“A group of young kids on the east end of the block stand in the street and pull guns out and won’t let you pass,” said a person who’s familiar with the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street in East Garfield Park.

“It’s a terrible block. Just horrible,” said the person, who asked not to be identified. Gunfire is a daily occurrence, the person added. When the police come, they get yelled at and spit on.

MAGArs? The world may never know.

A manhunt is underway for a student after 3 people were shot dead and 2 wounded at the University of Virginia

A manhunt is underway for a University of Virginia student suspected of fatally shooting three people and wounding two others late Sunday at the school’s main campus in Charlottesville, where students and others remain on lockdown, police and the university’s president said.

The Colorado Springs nightclub shooter has the same name as a guy arrested for a bomb threat last year.

In a rational society that would keep him from owning a ******* gun.

It is the same guy who is also the grandson of MAGA pro-Jan 6th insurrection (called it a new revolution) GOP politician Randy Voepel.

The shooter's case was sealed and Colorado Springs refuses to enforce Colorado's red flag laws anyway. They want **** like this. (Which again, was a shooting at an LGBTQ venue on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, among mainstream GOP calling everyone who doesn't hate gay people 'groomers'. I have no idea why this fact is getting things sent to AAH but screw it, it's salient and needs pointed out.)

Bogative, you missed this one, odd, you're usually quite quick with shootings.
But hey, it's their own fault for going out to a club unarmed I guess.

I pity the US. Your second amendment protection probably will top the deaths in Ukraine or at least get close.

Seems unlikely, 39 thousand or so dead, so far this year. And thats counting suicides.

Meanwhile in Ukraine, some 84,000 dead Russian soldiers. Estimates are as high as 100,000 dead Ukrainian civilians in Mariupol alone. No one really knows how many total dead Ukrainian civilians and they arent releasing military KIA numbers.

How about 50% more than deaths in the Eighth Air Force in World War 2?

Colorado has "red flag" laws that are supposed to prevent that very thing. Gun-advocates and other conservatives were quick to jump on that fact as evidence that gun control laws simply don't work, but whether they're missing (or just deliberately omitting) is the fact that the sheriff's department in the county where this happened is on the record asserting that they don't enforce the red-flag law because it is anti-gun-freedom.

Voters can always choose to elect a new sheriff. Or they can choose to arm themselves; they'd be crazy not to.

Very sadly I've found myself thinking that because of who the attack was aimed at some folk might not be entirely sympathetic.
