Merged To disclose, or not

Just fleshing out a hypothetical little disclosure question. Thinking who better to ask than you...

So far the question goes like this, maybe great minds will see fit to improve the question if deemed appropriate.

Why would you disclose, or why would you not disclose ET visitors?

Suppose you have responsibility and power to choose.

You have determined that earth is being visited by intelligent beings in IFOs. (Identified Flying Objects). You know they are identified as not from Earth.

Your resources have confirmed these ET craft can 'impossibly' fly straight up and into outer space at 20K+ mph

You also know.......

......they perform 'impossibly' ...violating known physics

......they can go poof (blink in and out of sight, motionless and on the fly)

......making right angle turns at 20K mph.

......they also pace your air force pilots at their speed

...... no contact or communication has been made.

That should be enough for this exercise, ....is it?

Why would you want to disclose, or to not disclose these visitors from off planet?

Why disclose or conceal visitors? Its your call.

Please answer or refine/improve the question if you prefer.

Call it a sci-fi project if you wish.

The place would be planet earth. The timeline would be our known history. Everything is the same, except it is your responsibility to reveal or conceal the visitors' existence.

.

If you had proof of that you wouldn't be able to keep it secret it would leak within days.

IF you had magical powers to silence people then I'd only tell the tourist board and at the same time direct the IRS to work up a way to tax them.

If this is all we really know about the ETs, then yes, we disclose. Because I believe that science actually works, so long as scientists have access to accurate information.

These ETs are demonstrating technologies that are either entirely inconsistent with our current understanding of science, or which go so far beyond ours as to be effectively the same thing. That means we've either misunderstood something important, or we've completely missed learning something that will radically change what we already know. And the only way we can possibly fix that is if scientists know all the facts, and thus can start asking the right questions, that might lead us to the answers the ETs have obviously found.

And this has to be a public disclosure, because we need every scientist in the world working on this issue. We've obviously done something so wrong, that we can't prejudge who will be best suited to finding the missing piece of the puzzle.

Is this a paid position?

Naturally. Just name your price.

Probably/apparently some already were paid to think about it and weigh in on it back in the 50s-60s, whenever it was that Brookings considered it.

"....Questions one might wish to answer by such studies would include: How might such information, under what circumstances, be presented to or withheld from the public for what ends? What might be the role of the discovering scientists and other decision makers regarding release of the fact of discovery?" – pages 183–184

Note:

Of course your power to choose disclosing or not preempts leaks.

There are no leaks if you choose not to disclose the ET presence.

I should have known better than assuming that would be understood.

Feel free to weigh in with that condition (no leaks possible) added to the hypothetical question.

Great serious answer. Thanks.

Brave too, I think, per marplot's "Careful, it's a loyalty test."

Say for the sake of the hypothetical, your power is such that there cannot be any leaks. Maybe you sufficiently control all info distribution by conditioning the media to self-police the topic, or you have conditioned everyone to giggle and smirk at any mention of ET visitors....or you have magic sprinkle powder that stops leaks before they start.....whatever it takes.

In other words, just say that any excuse you invent to avoid answering the OP (as Horatius did) would automatically be invalid, ...or just pretend you'd like to answer it, hypothetically, of course.

I'm confused. Do we know that we are being visited by alien craft or do we just know we've observed some things in the sky that seem inexplicable?

Over the years I've been the custodian of secrets. Some more important than others; none paradigm shifting. I've never felt a need to disclose for disclosure's sake. Two reasons - stuff is generally secret for a reason, weak as that reason may be, and, there's no particular foreseeable good that comes from exposure. Whistle blowing I can understand. Spilling the beans for grins or an idealistic call to truth doesn't do it for me.

Seriously?

If so, I suppose this sentence in the OP was overlooked or misunderstood...

"You have determined that earth is being visited by intelligent beings in IFOs. (Identified Flying Objects). You know they are identified as not from Earth."

Yes, 'we', the inhabitants of the aforementioned hypothetical exercise are being visited by alien craft.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to decide whether or not to tell the world. You have the power and the responsibility. You may also explain your choice, if you wish.

Please proceed in a responsible and thoughtful manner.

I tell Brietbart and then just see what happens.
