Actually a person who's laughing and joking at cameramen just after killing tow people in cold blood strikes me as stupid also. He actually does have a stupid look on his face although I'm sure a genius looks like this from time to time. The effect may be sub conscience as the intelligent thing to do in this situation would be to look anything but happy. The kid has destroyed himself and it is stupid to laugh and joke about it.

Which can be done in a civilised manner, and doesn't require that those doing it become every bit as bad as him, or even worse, since what is advocated is the possibility to act as a psychopath, but without any of the associated risks of being punished for it ... :rolleyes:
 
This kid is going to get three hots and a cot. I wonder if he'll be smiling 50 years from now? I was watching a program about a murderer sentenced to life in prison. He goes to Chapel. He eats three times a day. He walks in the courtyard and socializes with other prisoners and then its back to his cell for the night. Repeat. Hes 36 and he's been incarcerated since he was 18. This is what he has to look forward to for the rest of his life.

What really frightens me is that people who, to all appearances, are perfectly normal, have such deep, powerful sadism in them. I just don't understand how you can reconcile that with any empathy.

Which brings us back to the danger of thinking in terms of "those monsters aren't us, therefore it's ok to act all barbaric on them". Cf. post #85 by Chillzero

No I am better than him. This hypothetical guy who tortured and murdered my family did it because he is a sadistic **** who likes to make people feel pain for no other reason than he is evil. I would do it back to him, because he is a sadistic **** who likes to make people feel pain, and thus the same thing should happen to him.

I don't understand why anybody should have empathy for a piece of crap who murdered two innocent people over some money and cigarettes.

And I don't understand how anyone can choose whether to have empathy for a person. To me it seems such a person can't really have felt empathy in the first place.

I don't choose not to have empathy for this piece of crap. I simply don't. And yes, it is possible to not have empathy for pieces of crap, but to have it for normal people.
