The Truth about RFK Jr

David Gorski quoting an article in Science: "The White House appears to have a new target for its cuts to research funding: Grants linked to COVID-19, which President Donald Trump and his appointees have decided are a waste of money because the pandemic is over. Science has learned that grant termination letters went out last night to principal investigators of 29 awards made by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), including nine grants that were part of a program hoping to deliver antiviral drugs to prevent future pandemics. “The end of the pandemic provides cause to terminate COVID-related grant funds,” the notification states. “These grant funds were issued for a limited purpose: to ameliorate the effects of the pandemic. Now that the pandemic is over, the grant funds are no longer necessary.”

Dr. Gorski continued "Never has the NIH suddenly canceled such a large number of grants. Indeed, the NIH rarely cancels grants, and then usually only for malfeasance, such as misappropriation of funds or scientific fraud, and then only after an extensive investigation. What is happening here is that grants that have, in essence, “banned words” in their titles, abstracts, or other documents are being targeted for cancelation." Grants involving mRNA vaccines appear to be targeted also.

New antiviral drugs or a new mRNA vaccine may play a role in the next pandemic.

Right about now would also be a good time to stock up on N95 masks and schedule an appointment with your doctor to request boosters for every single vaccine you are eligible for.

The Tuesday invitation from Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) comes after HHS fired 10,000 of the department’s 80,000 workers late Monday as part of a massive reduction in force, affecting offices like the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Institutes of Health.

Several top scientists charged with overseeing research into disease prevention and cures at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) were notified that they were subject to a reduction in force on Tuesday as part of a devastating purge of federal employees carried out by US Health and Human Services secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., WIRED has learned.

Multiple sources at the NIH, granted anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that at least 10 principal investigators who were leading and directing medical research at the agency had been fired. Among them is Dr. Richard Youle, a leading researcher in the field of neurodegenerative disorders previously awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his groundbreaking research identifying mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease.

With respect to the CDC MedPageToday reported that the CDC would lose about 2,400 jobs: "Some of the hardest-hit areas of the agency included centers focused on injuries; global health; chronic disease prevention and health promotion; and a center focused on prevention of several infectious diseases including HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis." IIRC tuberculosis kills at least a million people per year worldwide.

Remember when the right wing had (and still has) a meltdown over Biden cancelling the KeystoneXL project because it would have created all these jobs (although it's not all that clear how many jobs would actually be created), but now say nothing with the government firing tens of thousands of people?

Not really IMO. The original claim was that RFK Jnr wants your family to get sick and die. I disagree, I think he doesn't care at all about your family's welfare, or indeed anything else about your family. It's like a fly in your house, I don't actively want it to die, but I also don't care whether it lives.

It doesn't make him any less despicable IMO.

I disagree with both of you. I think he cares about your family, but has a profoundly mistaken view on what makes people get sick and die. I think he truly believes that good things are bad and bad things are good, and is wilfully blind to any evidence to the contrary because of his ideology.

The permanent jobs were in the tens. The temp jobs were all welding the pipe together. But there is no real insterest in tar sands pipes right now, from the Canadian company. Why build pipes in America?
