The Trump/Putin summit predictions thread

I think I might start referring to the GOP as the Tories...In the American definition of the word, not the British;ie, a political group that supports foreign rule of America.

Trump on meeting with Putin: "I entered the meeting with the firm conviction that diplomacy and engagement is better than hostility and conflict."

Reality on the meeting with Putin:

"I successfully infiltrated the office of the President with help from by boyfriend. Hopefully we can put that aside so I can do the things I've been told to do"

That's 7:00pm BST (British Summer Time).

So he's been ordered to take back his fawning utterings.
Ordered by whom? Who could have prevailed upon him to change his tune? Bolton? Pompeo? Putin himself?

ETA: I see now you mean high-level Republicans, but I'm still curious how they got him to do it. Saying they'll block his Supreme Court nominee unless he retracts?

Trump's gaslighting is worthy of Orwell.

"I mispoke. I said I didn't know why it would be Russia. I meant I didn't know why it wouldn't be Russia."

Someone told him to read the bull **** statement and don't dare go off script.

Indeed. Notice how he both denies that Russia did the hack and simultaneously celebrates it: "He's outsmarted her every step of the way."
I wonder what he means, precisely, by outsmarting her?

CNN: Trump tries a do-over.
MSNBC: Trump reverses course.
BBC: Trump reverse Russian meddling remark.
ABC: Trump walks back summit comments.
Even Foxnews: Trump backtracks.

Nobody is seeing this as good.

He was forced to retract his statement, as advised by leading Republicans.

I have never seen Trump look so angry: arms crossed, massive scowl, pushing his water away and fiddling around with his papers. The live stream I was watching messed up the speed and the words, so didn't catch it all.

Would love to know what h had written in heavy black ink on that last page.
In any case, changing the words, doesn't change the fact of his open disloyalty.

Cannot take that back.

Sounds like the name of a sleep aid... Having a restless night? Try Nokulusion. Nokulusion will soothe those moderate to severe unwanted, nagging thoughts that are keeping you awake, allowing you to get a restful nights sleep.

(Warning, Nokulusion may be habit forming, do not not take Nokulusion if you are pregnant, or may become pregnant. Nokulusion may cause you to blurt out incomprehensible statements at random moments without control. Nokulusion may cause an irreversible skin condition with symptoms that include, but are not limited to, a warm, orange glow. Always check with your doctor, or handlers, before trying Nokulusion.)

Great! One addition to your copy...

None of those headlines are honest. Ari Melber called it, he said the headlines would look like Trump changed what he said, but he didn't really. That was one line out of many many lines including direct questions answered that he didn't take back.

IOW, no one is calling him on the fact the take back is an obvious lie.

He's had to do a lot of walking back in the past month or so, pretty much unprecedented for him - the families EO, the criticism of May in the Sun and on audio and now his "reversal" of Helsinki remarks. I'm super-curious how anyone prevails on him to do these things. With the family separations, perhaps Ivanka or Melania had a hand. I don't know enough about the Sun "fake news" thing - Murdoch? But the last one puzzles me the most. Who said to him "You must walk this back" and how did they prevail? Slight chance I guess that Trump realized this on his own.

Very slight.

Yesterday Fox News was critical of Trump. Today they're backtracking and accepted his non-clarifying non-clarification.
Some thought this would be the big turning point but it's back to business as usual.

Russia did attack the US but the investigation is a "witch hunt" which is why he believes Putin that it never happened even though he believes his intelligence people despite the fact that it's all just fake news.

Simple.

Still curious how the pressure to "clarify" worked ... I'm wondering if Pompeo, Bolton, Kelly or some combination threatened to resign if he did not read that correction?

It still leaves Trump saying the U.S. behaved "foolishly" with regard to Russia.

It's probably too much to ask that Fox continue to hold his feet to the fire, but the totality of his statements (including his embellishment today that the hacking "could have been other people, there are a lot of people") is still plenty damning.

This whole sordid episode nicely calls attention to Trump's body of work.

What I find odd is that he long ago, albeit elliptically, did at least say Russia "probably" meddled.

Trump does not like to backtrack. I imagine he's seething with resentment over having him read today's script. Who does he blame? Because it can't be himself.

Don't you think he sounds confused?
