The Trump Presidency: Part 20

It took a deadly pandemic and a worldwide economic shutdown to bring Trump's economy back down to Obama levels.

Pandemic largely caused in the US by Donnie's stupidity.
But don't allow me to interfere with your hymns to our Divine Dear Leader.

He just spent quite a bit of time attacking the media in his last presser just a few minutes ago.

No matter how many times this stuff gets posted the Trump supporters always lie about it. And then disappear.

And a similar chart of real GDP; hide the x-axis and you can't tell when Donnie was elected.
Here's another the Trumpies don't like to acknowledge-

Here's a couple more, one with the timeline redacted- see if you can guess where Trump's election falls:

And the same one not so redacted:

Bottom line is, an economy is a process; processes have trends; and assessing an economy depends on context. Trumpies, OTOH, absolutely depend on seeing Teh Economy as context-free, static chunks of blame or praise. Yes, it's true that the unemployment rate reached 10% under Obama; but that didn't happen in a vacuum, and understanding why it got so high depends on historical context. The same with Trump's brags- whatever his acolytes choose to believe, the actual numbers show that "his" economy didn't come from nowhere, conjured up strictly by his tiny magic hands.

...

I'm sure they just figure,
"K, just wait a few days, a week and then, 'Hey I didn't see your stinking chart'. WTH?"

Like having this maniac's finger on the nuclear trigger. A nothingburger, right?
"What's the worst that could happen, we start over. Probably better."

Like the man said, "You can't fix stupid." ;)

Ah, but you're forgetting Obummer destroyed the economy all the way back in 2008 before he was even elected!

I live in Mississippi; I have that seriously put to me all the freakin' time. About half my immediate family believes this very deeply (and all of my in-laws, I think); but, as with their religious convictions, they're a little fuzzy on the mechanics. And that fuzziness is the feature, not the bug, of the political as well as the religious belief system.

I think you underestimate how deep partisanship runs. Just today I saw a tweet from someone saying that the Democrats have messed this crisis up terribly by not doing what the Republicans would have done - handing out food and supplies to every American.

It's easy to blame "others", and the current leadership actively encourages that. It's even easier if blaming the actual people to blame would involve admitting to yourself that you were wrong. And the more vociferous your support was, and the more time and energy you put in to it, the harder it is to say "oh, maybe Trump wasn't God Emperor of the United States after all".

Exactly. The more emotional investment people have in something, the less likely they are to admit they were wrong. True Trumpers are extremely unlikely to admit he conned them. They are more likely to become even more entrenched in their support.

First of all, let me give my condolences.

Secondly, I never cease to wonder at the ability of people to delude themselves.

Well, it is the Gulf Coast, at least, which is (marginally) more liberal than the rest of the state. That's relative, of course- "more liberal," in this context, would still be pretty much to the right of any place other than, maybe, Alabama.

The ability starts with a need, I think; and once the need is there, the ability more or less writes itself.

My father's bio father's family were from AL, MS, and the FL panhandle. I managed to find his family and talked to some of them. Thank goodness he was adopted and raised elsewhere.

Agreed.
