What the Market wanted to hear from Jay Powell and the Federal Reserve was that this was the beginning of a lengthy and aggressive rate-cutting cycle which would keep pace with China, The European Union and other countries around the world....

....As usual, Powell let us down, but at least he is ending quantitative tightening, which shouldn’t have started in the first place - no inflation. We are winning anyway, but I am certainly not getting much help from the Federal Reserve!

Of course, the problem is Trump has so messed up the U.S. government (funding cuts, bad policy decisions, etc.) that it will probably take years if not decades to fix the damage.


Well, given the fact that those pro-Trump people were gullible enough to vote for Trump in the first place, so obviously they aren't always capable of critical thinking. Even if they don't have enough followers to actually overthrow the government, a few dozen hardcore trumpers who think "The leftists stole the election. Have to fight back" can cause a lot of problems.

Think of the nutcase who tried to 'investigate' Comet Ping Pong. Or the guy who drove around in the van with various anti-media pictures all over it, who sent bombs to CNN. And those were cases that occurred after Trump won the election. Imagine how much worse it will be when Trump becomes unhinged after an election loss.

Then you have the hardcore neo-Nazis and the like. They have a taste of power now with Trump as 'their guy'. If Trump loses, they may become more prone to violence as they lose their biggest supporter.

When I think of those people, the word "organized" doesn't not pop into my head. Yes there will be an upswing in nutjobs. There are also lots of white supremacy groups. Those groups are made up of people who have jobs (or not) bills, debt, obligations. They might spring to go to a big rally once in a while but they don't make their living at it. Staging a coup doesn't get you back to your job Monday morning. I'm really not worried about violence.

I am worried that the Stupid Bitch in Chief will not allow a transition and also won't allow the ceremony to take place as tradition dictates. I fully expect he won't come to the inauguration.

Once the election results are in, Congress counts the electoral votes. There's not much they can do there since they only have the votes cast to work with. After that there's not stopping it. Lyndon Johnson was sworn in by a family friend and federal judge on Air Force One with his hand on a Catholic missal (no bible could be found on the plane and the missal was in a desk drawer). Trump could stop the formal ceremony in part but he can't keep the president elect away from every federal judge in the country.

My understanding is Vice President Johnson became president the moment JFK was pronounced dead. The swearing in that subsequently took place was ceremonial, though yes, the oath of office is proscribed by the constitution.

Unless I’m mistaken, it seems to me it would follow that, once the secretaries of state certify their election results and the electors then cast their ballots in the Electoral College, come noon (EST) January 20th, there's a new president. And a new ex, whether he likes it or not.

The Prosecutors who lost the case against SEAL Eddie Gallagher (who I released from solitary confinement so he could fight his case properly), were ridiculously given a Navy Achievement Medal. Not only did they lose the case, they had difficulty with respect....

....to information that may have been obtained from opposing lawyers and for giving immunity in a totally incompetent fashion. I have directed the Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer & Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson to immediately withdraw and rescind the awards....

....I am very happy for Eddie Gallagher and his family!

I despise Trump, but with the Dems engaging in civil war, his relection seems very likely at this moment.

A year from now, 18 of the 20 or so possible candidates will be forgotten about. Once the Democratic Party candidate is chosen, it's "all for one". Mostly.

That's one danger. On the other hand, it may be worth a reminder that the political calculus is notably more complex than that, especially for Democrats. Repeatedly moving ever further to the right just to accede to Republican and corporate propaganda versions of "moderate" also means that an increasing number of currently reliably Democratic-leaning voters will be disillusioned and just sit at home and vote for neither. To be clear, Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans, both when it comes to the official members and the "independents" that tend to firmly side with one party or another. The true independents tend not to vote at all in the first place. The issue at hand is not so much about not alienating the so called "swing voters" so much as energizing the supporters to actually get out and vote, which is much more complicated than you seem to want to acknowledge. There's notably more that could be gone into, of course, but your analysis is both shallow and perfectly in line with what the far right have been trying to get Democrats to do as one aspect of their attempts to get Democrats to lose or, if the Democrats win, to have a less threatening person to deal with.

While Trump is helping with that as a form of backlash, I suppose it's worth asking... which Democratic candidates would YOU refuse to vote for, dudalb?

Sometimes I wonder if Putin ever thinks Trump is laying it on a bit thick.

Putin doesn't give one hot diggety-damn what Trump says or does, as long as it creates continuous chaos in US government and the country generally. In fact he is not above giving the whole chaos wheel a little spin now and then to keep it going. Because while the USA heads downhill in a rickety handcart pushed by the orange buffoon, that makes Putin, and by extension Russia, look like the bigger, more stable country.

This is somewhat disturbing. If Trump doesn't like military people, he'll just have them stripped of their commendations? I'm sure that will endear himself to the military.

And this "Moderates and Centrists are evil" rhetoric I am getting from a lot of people here is just what Trump wants to hear.

YOU are the only person who sees things YOUR way. That should probably be a given but you keep speaking in absolutes. There's no war going on in the Democratic Party any more than the Obama populist faction was warring against Hillary's old guard. Did that hand the election to McCain? When the Dems have an actual war, like '68 and '72(and the aftermath), they hand the White House to any old Republican they GOP chooses.

I see this preliminary season as healthy. The old guard has to come to terms with the young turks. The young turks have to find a way to get their message across to the old guard. So far, in spite of a number of more rabid supporters of both elements (ignoring that it's hard to really be "rabidly moderate"), I see no blood-letting.
