The Sensitive Issue of Circumcision

And the thread also contains the first and only instance in which somebody wished ill health to my sons. That was weird.

And, if I recall correctly, someone cursed not only me but my ancestors in that thread.

ETA: Lest we forget.

More on phantom limbs here:

http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/en/pain/microsite/medicine2.html

After amputation of a limb, an amputee continues to have an awareness of it and to experience sensations from it. These phantom limb sensations are also present in children born without a limb, suggesting that perception of our limbs is 'hard-wired' into our brain and that sensations from the limbs become mapped onto these brain networks as we develop.

An interesting link to add to the general discussion on circumcision:

The link said:
Circumcision deaths in the Eastern Cape continue to climb with reports on Thursday of four more fatalities in the Transkei.

The deaths brought the total for the current winter circumcision season to 19, provincial Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said.

http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2351498,00.html

PLEASE NOTE: I am in no way implying that the circumcision generally talked about in this discussion is the same as the circumcision talked about in the link. I just thought it would provide an interesting perspective on circumcision from a traditional or religious point of view.

Why? Not being sarcastic, just curious, I've never known anyone who wished they were uncircumcised.

Because it bothers me that my body was altered without my consent, and because I would like to know what I'm missing.

I didn't really think about this issue for several years, but in doing research before my wife's pregnancy, I really got to thinking about it.

Also, there seems to be a shift lately to uncircumsized men in mainstream porn. Now that I've been . . . ahem. . . exposed to them, they look like a lot of fun. ;)

Lying in bed at night, during that period just before you doze off into proper sleep, is a little like being mildly under the influence of alcohol. You inherently know that your thoughts are unalduterated and completely honest. "A drunken man speaks a sober mind".

So, there I was, last night, lying in bed half-consciously pondering the notion of circumcision, and I couldn't help realizing how completely blatantly bizarre and inhuman the ritual practice is, regardless of proffered justification. It simply is. Simple as that, and anybody who thinks otherwise is living in the dark ages.

I'm sorry if this offends, but anybody who disagrees, in my mind is either inhuman, heartless, ignorant, hypocritical, bigoted, unintelligent or any combination of the above, and isn't worthy of the categorization "human being".

Biased? Just kidding!!! :D But how do you really feel?

I think you missed one category -- obsessed.

We see this all over history. Otherwise intelligent people go on these insane crusades because they become obsessed with some issue. Think about all the barbaric things people have done to each other, thinking they were helping, despite cries of protest. Lobotomy, anyone?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transorbital_lobotomy

According to that wikipedia entry, as many lobotomies were performed in the U.S. as nearly every other country in the world combined!

I don't think it is merely a coincidence that the U.S. is one of the last bastions of circumcision in the world as well. The uneducated in my country have a particularly bad combination of being too trusting of the medical establishment and too obsessed with medical care as a solution to health problems. Put the two together, and you have a population where overzealous doctors will flourish. The only consolation is that we are so litigation crazy at least the doctors might try to contain their "enthusiasm."

Skeptigirl seems to be one of these types. Even though she doesn't even have a penis she is absolutely obsessed with the possible medical benefits of circumcision, to the point that she refuses to question her predetermined notion that a foreskin is useless -- despite so much evidence to the contrary that an unbiased observer would likely consider it a fact.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the 1949 nobel prize in medicine was for the invention of the prefrontal lobotomy... if that isn't scary, I don't know what is.

"Do you think I ruined your sex life by having you circumcised?"

Ahh, that's exactly the question that SHOULD be forever in the backs of the minds of EVERY parent who had their baby or infant circumcised for routine, cosmetic, traditional or other non-medical reasons.

Shame on you all; you made a decision that wasn't yours to make. YOU TOOK SOMETHING THAT WASN'T YOURS TO TAKE. You are at best a thief, at worst an abusive parent.

Abusive parent? Oh yes! I know some of you (especially circumcised men) take some kind of pleasure knowing that your baby son will suffer as you suffered. Most mothers who accidentally witness the procedure (they walk by the room in the hospital at just the wrong time) actually hear the baby's cries and feel sickened by it, whereas the fathers feel some kind of twisted pride.

It's messed up.

As in the last thread, there is STILL no good reason to do this. Those who defend it are either ignorant, in denial or all three.

PS: Unless medically indicated, IT WASN'T YOURS TO TAKE.

ODE TO MY FORESKIN

What magical sensation thou provideth me;
That those lacking cannot comprehend;

What silent sheath abundant with nerve endings;
Those endings which bewilder the mutilated;

My foreskin just how I adoreth thee;
The ignoramus will never understand;

Though testament is obvious behind me;

I imagine before women expected to enjoy sex, premature ejaculation was much less common.

Damn feminists!

Are you saying it's a bad thing? :D

Raising the bar is simply a darwinian selection pressure which favours those of us who already make the grade.

If you need to be circumcised to last long enough to satisfy her, well, you're way behind some of us who have mastered things like self-control. Heck, we even take it for granted.

And here's more justification for not getting circumcised, from another ongoing thread (well, I'm assuming autumn1971 is circumcised. Otherwise, he's forgotten what his foreskin's for!).

Incidentally, I suggest you don't become involved in said thread if you're of a sensitive disposition.

I agree. I find it hard to understand why the practice continues.

So it's true: 1+1 can = 3! ;)

Only for very large values of 1.

@Southwind17,

I'd argue there's a key difference between mesh on a bathing suit and more natural stimuli as methods for validating one's sensitivity, and hence assessing potential downsides of circumcision. I know which I'd opt for for stimulation!

Maybe slow it down a little? Wouldn't want to set the bedclothes alight now!

My son is intact. The only problem that being uncircumcised poses is that some people are still very misinformed. I have to be very careful to tell everyone to keep their damn hands off my sons foreskin. When he was almost 3, I'd gotten lax about warning people to keep their hands off my son's pee-pee because no one was doing it. Then, during a hospital stay, a damn doctor pushed his foreskin back because she said it needed to be "scretched"...which was not at all recommended by his primary care physician.
