It's a rule designed to keep the grandstands from becoming a political battlefield, with various factions fighting to get their slogans as much TV exposure as possible. Huh? You are failing to understand Australia's relationship with China. Of course the Chinese government is interested in the Australian Open. If you knew the first thing about Sino-Australian relations, you'd know that China is absolutely interested in what happens in Australia, especially when it concerns one if its citizens.

But I shouldn't expect that someone in Florida knows a great deal about Asian politics.

No, not really. What you are failing to understand is that the real world isn't as plain yes-or-no left-or-right as you would like it to be. Not holding one extreme position doesn't automatically mean that you must therefore hold the opposite extreme position.
