The One: New McCain Ad

How come the only thing the McCain campaign can do is complain about Obama's populism and (admittedly, sometimes hokey) rhetoric? Besides the people who already think he's some sort of clueless débutant (Brainster), who's this supposed to appeal to? Who is going to be won over by it?

If this is the worst the Republicans can summon against Obama, it's over.

The one religion that gets no skepticism around here, the one religion that cannot be mocked, is Obama. Blinded by the lightness.
Woe unto the unbelievers, for they shall be taunted about how lame their campaign is. And they shall be cast into the outer darkness, where there is sarcasm and gnashing of teeth.

It's not quite burning you at the stake, but hey, it's not quite a religion, is it? More a, what's the phrase ... point of view different from yours.

:)

Point taken. I am surprised that nobody found the bit with Moses funny; it completely caught me by surprise. But then, people seldom find funny that which mocks their worldview. I suppose that's just another form of confirmation bias.

I found it funny, although partly in a meta sense because it's such a silly and hamfisted attempt at humor. I mean, the rest of the ad is comparatively dry in its sarcasm, and I'd say it works reasonably well on that level. It's the kind of humor you kind of have to agree with to find funny, so I personally don't find it that funny (although a few moments give me smirks because Obama provides such easy material to work with), but I can definitely see where the humor lies.

But then suddenly they whip out a clip of Charlton Heston in the ten commandments. It would be silly if they threw any movie clip in, and it's even more over the top because of the technicolor epicness of Cecil B. DeMille, and then to make it transcendentally silly they have that infamous Obama logo zooming through the parted water. It's just, what the hell?

And add to that it really comes out of nowhere. Although there was a verbal lead in prevents it from being a total non-sequitur ("this was the moment when the rise of the ocean began to slow and our planet began to heal") the ad before that has a structure of alternating between Obama clips and the voiceover guy accompanied with onscreen text, so it breaks the pattern. But there isn't really anything in there to acknowledge the break, since the Obama chanting in the background continues and the transition is just a gradual dissolve. So it just without any warning whatsoever throws a completely insane clip into their ad and then goes back to normal to finish up the ad.

The lameness of it all caught me by surprise. Moses? Charlton Heston? I mean ... use Neo from the Matrix or something. Actually, that's what I thought it would be when I saw the title.

Nobama. I have heard the McCain camp internally refer to Obama as "the One" for awhile, so I wonder if this was just some desperate ad thrown together in five minutes based on their little in-joke. Others are right -- the ending is incredibly weak.

I thought it was funny, but then I thought it was funny when I had heard they called him "the One" because they're right: Obama does come off as incredibly smug. I'm not necessarily talking about all of that "elitist" crap about his comments with regard to rural Penn., but this guy just reminds me of a black George Clooney (and both of them play basketball with Samantha Power. Coincidence?). These are the type of guys who are incredibly smug even when they're self-deprecating (unlike Conan O'Brien or Jon Stewart). Compare Obama's run for the presidency with Clooney's campaign for best supporting actor.

The out of context quotes and over-the-top imagery makes this more appropriate for
"The Daily Show". It's something that should be played for low-stakes laughs rather than as a serious argument. Context matters. We know that almost anyone who runs to be President of the United States of America already has a huge ego.

It's pretty funny.

The best way that McCain's campaign can find to fight is to copy Hil3ary.

That says a lot about several groups of people.

Hmm, maybe because religious Obamaism is a fantasy of Obama's opponents, subscribed to only by a handful of delusional supporters.

Obama supporter = Democrat = Clinton lover

This formula is hardwired into BAC's brain.

No, CS, I'd estimate about half the current Obama supporters loved Clinton because prior to the last primary race she was getting about half the votes. So I'm curious why all the attacks those supporters were making on Obama ... like the one by Hillary in that video that we can see so many supporters applauding ... just disappeared from their lips once Obama was their man. ;)

McCain Campaign said:
Barack Obama is popular

Aww now that's a let-down. Where's the good ole' fashioned redundancy that I've come to rely on from whiny conservatives?

Ahh...that's the good stuff! :)

You would have to ask them that, we're not big on Clintonistas round here.

Tell it to "PUMA"

With so many posters "round here" defending the Clintons on my Brown and Foster thread, I'm a tad skeptical. :D

Of course; if someone doesn't believe the Clintons killed Brown and Foster than they must automatically have given them their unwavering support and agree with their politics wholly. It has nothing to do with skepticism or being an incredulous douche for that matter...it's just a conspiracy and nobody but you sees the truth.
