The Official UK Election Thread! 6th May it is!

Well that works out about 150 quid a year for 10 years.

I think the 60 Bil raised would be better served in our public services rather than a tax cut that doesn't help out the very poorest.

The one that most springs to mind is their attitude to the PR system for the Scottish parliament. They're very keen on PR and they were very keen on the system used at that election. This is a mix of directly elected constituency MSPs, on a first-past-the-post system, and MSPs from regional lists to make up the proportionality.

Then, after the election, where it so happened that nearly all their MSPs (and Labour's) were constituency-elected, while most of the Conservative and SNP's were list-elected, they started denigrating the list MSPs in the most vitriolic terms, calling them second-class and "not real MSPs" and things like that.

I had quite a few more examples at one time, but I've managed to put them out of my mind.

Rolfe.

Hmmm I can't find any record of this and don't remember this at the time either.

Let's Cut Benefits for those who refuse to work.

This is the new Conservative's campaign poster. Not much of the big society message here and it is going down rather well on Conservative Home. "It's good to see the party getting specific about what 'change' means," blogs Tim Montgomery. The first person in the comments is wildly enthusiastic: "Wow. That's a tough message. I like it."

The Spectator and New Statesman blogs are looking at the wider context, and what it means for Conservative party. "You can expect plenty of handwringing about whether this message is too tough, or whether it represents the Tories shifting rightwards in the aftermath of the Lib Dem surge," says Peter Hoskin in the Spectator.

George Eaton in the New Statesman see consequences of the party's internal tensions being played out across poster sites across the country. The change of tone is, he says, evidence that communications chief and former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has won out over the more optimistically-orientated strategy director Steve Hilton, a key supporter of Cameron's big society.

This is one is certainly a lot tougher than what we have been used to seeing from the Tories of late.

[adopt an alpha male deep voice-over] "The Campaign. Just. Got. Ugly!"

I'm surprised the Tories are going down this line. It might sure up their base, but it'll reinforce the "nasty party who target the feckless poor" sterotype for the centre left.....

...snip...

Great idea - after all why can't they train their kids to get through the smallest open window and pass the stolen goods out - that way the kids are learning to be self-reliant and gaining a lifelong skill.

Ah, change you can believe in.

Stick a fork in them, they're done.

This is already the case. The job seeker's allowance is exactly that.

One comment on live TV and you're damning the whole party?? Harsh.

I also remember the "second class MSP" comments being made against list members for the first year or so. It wasn't just the odd comment, I can assure you.

It's pervasive and constant. That was merely one example out of many. It's something I've observed in the LibDem party over many years. Everything is spun to suit their audience, and to make them look like the good guys in any situation. Nothing is ever a point of principle for them, not even PR.

You might say, you could say that about any party. Probably you could, to some extent, it's inevitable. But it's not really an accusation I'd level at Labour or the Tories in the way I level it at the LibDems. With them, it's a constant pattern of behaviour that at first shocked me when it originally registered with me, but now I just expect it.

No it isn't. Job Seeker's allowance is paid to the unemployed who have made sufficient NI contributions and are actively seeking work and it is only paid for 182 days.

You'd think there would be news reports about this disgusting behaviour. Maybe my google-fu is failing me.

They are the good guys :D I have no idea what you mean regarding principles, what principles should they adhere to? What principles do the other parties (important parties not the joke parties) adhere to these days? Labour is pro banking and the Conservatives pro change, madness.
