I still think it's better than FPTP, though, as it allows you to state your true preference without any fear of your vote being wasted. And you can effectively vote for "anyone but X".
Tony Woodley is having a hard time beating BA.
Bob Crow on the other hand perhaps has more potential but the tories are unlikely to close the railways or the underground so an alturnative option may be sought.
I'd still put up with almost any level of travel chaos to see Bob Crow ousted. That man is insane.
Unfortunately the evidence suggests that the level of chaos is only limited by the time it would take to completely automate the underground system.
Now I'm sitting in my home in the Borders countryside, with authorisation as a polling agent and a counting agent in my pocket, and the remaining dregs of the leaflets in a bag, having been round almost every house in a three-mile radius. Trying my damndest, by the way, not to get David Steel's daughter elected. I'll go through tomorrow night at the count in Dumfries.
Unfortunately for Ashles' travel plans I can't see this happening any time soon; I can't imagine how much it would cost to retro-fit the entire underground system like that, but I'm quite confident in calling it "A lot". Plus while they were getting it installed I imagine that the unions would have the human-driven system entirely shut down in dismay, leading to a rather severe loss of income.
Under normal circumstances I would be tempted to dismiss this leaked report as some kind of a joke, cooked up by anti-union fantasists, but in the current climate of cuts and attacks on public services we are taking it very seriously and it will be resisted.
It may well be that some junior politician is simply flying a kite to make a name for themselves, but RMT will not sit back and allow this lethal and unworkable idea to gain any traction whatsoever.
