The Official Alex Jones Thread!

On what grounds can Bluto refuse to cough up? How long could he continue to refuse?

I'm picturing property seizures and forced sales. But I'm the layman's layman's here.

I'm also dreaming of sheriffs' deputies and federal marshals clapping irons on that thuggish SOB and hauling him away.

First, he can appeal the ruling. Continue to drag his victims through the court system.
Meanwhile, he'll be busy concealing his assets.
But I share your dreams, although that would have to mean some sort of criminal charge, not just a civil lawsuit.

First, he can appeal the ruling.

Which may have been his strategy all along, but some of the other comments here make me think he doesn't really have a strategy beyond stalling and hoping it will go away. The decision to issue a default judgment rather than a lesser legal remedy falls under the judge's discretion, which is certainly reviewable at a higher level. The judge makes a pretty good case that her discretion is sound here.

Alec Grunt can prolong this, but he'll just be crawling through more mud, and publicly.

Can prolonged evasion of paying damages ordered by the court give rise to criminal prosecution?

Am I grasping at floating twigs here?

The judge ordered Jones to pay plaintiff's reasonable legal fees, so there is some motivation for him not to drag this out indefinitely.

Criminal contempt of court is probably not possible. What happens is that the plaintiff petitions the court to have the award enforced, the court orders Jones to show cause why he should not be held in contempt, whereupon a new order issues for him to obey the previous order. Repeatedly ignoring such orders can cause Jones to be held in jail until he complies, but I understand it takes a while to get there.

Obligatory: IANAL.

I don’t think he can appeal the ruling, because no facts were ever presented. It’s really just about damages at this point.

The ruling was based on facts in evidence, but not facts relating to the alleged defamation. The facts at issue were the procedural history of the case -- namely that Jones had not acted upon discovery requests. Plaintiffs made several good-faith efforts to get discovery information, and had been suitably forebearing. Dragging one's feet on discovery is nothing new.

If you read the ruling, the judge had a number of options to choose from in sanctioning the defendant for his conduct, but chose to issue a judgment of default, which is rare in such cases. But that discretion is usually appealable. Abuse of discretion was the grounds for appeal, for example, in several of the post-election lawsuits that Donald Trump filed. The trial judges in some of these cases had ruled that the complaints were defective in one way or another, or had declined requests to amend the complaints. These appeals all failed, but not because abuse of discretion is not a suitable basis for appeal.

I hope to dog you're right. I don't know how he'll avoid the penalty... but I know he'll delay it by any means possible. Meanwhile his brown-shirts will continue to harass any of his victims willing to file subsequent lawsuits. Enough is enough with this criminal.

Richly deserved. I look forward to the judgements bankrupting him and his companies, but that's probably too much to hope for.

Probably. I think he was always going to lose, and probably knew it. By withholding discovery in this case, he prevents the evidence from becoming public and prevents it from being used essentially for free by other potential plaintiffs on any number of the topics Joned may intentionally have lied about. Either he thinks he has a strong case on appeal (he doesn't) or he's limiting his liability to the Sandy Hook matter.

I'd be interested in what any lawyers here think about "willful and malicious injury" exception to bankruptcy. There's lots of case law that interprets willful and malicious injury as more than physical injury. Bankruptcy courts have applied this exception to inflicting financial injury maliciously and willfully.

True, but I think they really wanted Jones to be publically humliated more then anything else, and that has happened.
I

I want him smearing windshields with dirty newspaper for a living. When he's not in prison.

And then there is that Alex Jones has ran up quite a legal bill in this case. He might have to worry about his lawyers then the plantiffs...
