The Official Alex Jones Thread!

Alex went through seven lawyers, because they kept quitting, and the Court agreed that it was all Jones's fault for not complying with discovery...

In other defamation cases the strategy is often for the defendant's legal team simply to overwhelm the plaintiff with procedural minutiae, with the goal of depleting the plaintiff's resources to press the suit. The plaintiff runs out of money and gives up. What I'm hearing from you is that this is pretty much the opposite of that case. Defendant's lawyers appear to have been trying to be diligent, but the client was not cooperating.

...it seems clear from depositions that Infowars not only doesn't want to, but literally can't produce documentation about what it does, because no one there knows anything about anything...

I'm shocked to discover that Infowars is a poorly-organized and poorly-run company! As was noted above, incompetence does not bar discovery without consequences.

Well, one of them insisted on deposing Hillary Clinton ...
so no, some where just terrible.
But even those who were not didn't have a a leg to stand on because Jones was not cooperating at all, even after being court-ordered to multiple times.

It does not really matter if Jones is bankrupt or not;if he has to pay substantial libel costs, that will wreck whatever creditibility he has except for the True Beleivers. The kind of semi support he has been getting from some right wing groups will pretty much vanish.

The thing is, who actually buys the BS he's shilling in the first place, apart from the true believers?

I'm surprised he hasn't attempted the Tucker Carlson defense, ie. any reasonable person would "arrive with an appropriate amount of skepticism" at anything Jones says.

Good luck to the plaintiffs trying to collect. And he'll brag about stiffing them for what he owes.

Actually, wasn't that his defense in court? I remember a claim he made that his entire shtick was for shock entertainment value.

I think inlicting a major defeat on Jones was the main motive behind the lawsuits.
And do you have to have a pessimistic view of everything?

A number of people have tried the "Just Kidding" defense. And it has almost never worked.

Jones was getting some play in the more mainstream conservative press when he turned on Obama, and some more when he supported Trump.
But a major league loss in a big libel case will scare away this kind of support.
He will be seen a loser.

I'm surprised that Jones would pass up on an opportunity to grandstand. Losing by default reduces his ability to give an epic speech from the courtroom floor. Given the wide protections that 1A provides in this country, there was even a pretty decent chance he'd win if he cooperated with the lawsuit, despite his unambiguously repugnant behavior concerning the aggrieved Sandy Hook families.

Refusing the process and losing by default is a real head scratcher.

In the Carlson case the complaint was eventually dismissed because the pleading was defective. (The plaintiff was required to plead actual malice since Carlson is a public figure, and the complaint did not do that.) I don't recall whether the legal depth of the shock-jock defense was plumbed.

It wasn't in a criminal trial, but in his divorce proceedings, when Alex' lawyer suggested that he was playing a character, like Batman or something.

That's probably true, but I really doubt it's possible to play at a character for so long and not have it impact your real thinking.

Much of the same was said about Rush Limbaugh, who's right wing persona was largely born of a parody.

It's immaterial anyway, whether he's sincere or not, the damage done is very real.

You're vastly overestimating his base. At least half of them think the earth is flat, and the other half are open to the idea.
