The Nautilus case

Nu kommer TV-serien om mordet på Kim Wall – men en af sagens centrale personer er slet ikke med (Berlingske, Oct. 7, 2019)
‘Now the TV series about the murder of Kim Wall will be produced – but one of the central characters of the case does not appear in it at all.’

The series focuses on the investigation of the crime. That Peter Madsen does not appear in the series, i.e. that no actor playing Peter Madsen appears, is in accordance with the wishes of Kim Wall's parents.

Earlier this year, an inmate, apparently another psychopath, attempted to stab Peter Madsen but failed:

The TV series Efterforskningen (trailer in Danish), in English The Investigation, premieres next week, Sep. 28, 2020.
Teaser from Swedish TV svt.se.

I assume that it will soon be possible to stream a version with English subtitles.

Netflix won't be showing Into the Deep:
Variety Magazine called it "riveting," as well as "restrained, humanist and chilling". It is, the magazine wrote, both “a rare opportunity to study a murderer before his first kill", and "a story of the workers left ashore floundering to understand how they devoted their lives to a fiend”.

But after several of the key participants in the film withdrew their consent, Netflix has decided not to stream the documentary, Sweden's state broadcaster SVT reported on Tuesday evening.

It will be streamed on Netflix, after all.

Notice that this is not the TV series The Investigation (IMDb), which started airing recently.

I had promised myself I wouldn't revisit this thread, but eh...

Anyway, Peter Madsen attempted a jailbreak today. Details are currently very sketchy, but both EOD (bomb disposal) and sharpshooters are present at the scene.

Eye witness reports on video (TV2.dk)
People saw armed police stop a white van and pull out two people, one of them Madsen, so apparently somebody must have helped smuggle* him out of prison.

The hostage was a female psychologist, according to Ekstra Bladet.

It appears to have been an extremely short break out - 5-6 minutes:

- Klokken 10.21 får vi en anmeldelse om, at han er flygtet. Vi sender alt mandskab på gaden, og 10.26 lykkedes det en af vores patrulje at anholde ham, forklarede han.

- At 10:21 we receive a report that he has escaped. We activate all personnel, and at 10:26 one of our patrols manage to arrest him, he explained
Peter Madsen threatened his way out, using a fake bomb belt

The van he got into wasn't a get-away vehicle. Somebody just happened to be parked there, and that person was still in the van when he entered it. The police pulled Madsen out the van before it could leave.

It seems very liberal that this could happen. Impossible in most English speaking countries.

I guess Netflix dug deep and eased the sensitivities of the reluctant with cold cash.

It took only 11 minutes from the moment he threatened the psychologist till he was arrested in the van. And his breakout led to six new charges.
10:15: He threatens her with a fake gun and a fake bomb belt to let him out of the building and accompany him to the gate.
10:20: He threatens the prison guard to let him out of the gate and escapes on foot.
10:21: The prison reports the breakout to the police. They send all cars to the location.
10:25: He points the 'gun' at two prison guards chasing him.
10:25: He gets into a van and threatens the driver to drive off. The driver is a foreigner who doesn't understand Danish. :)
10:26: The police pull him out of the car and place him on the ground while awaiting the arrival of dogs trained to recognize explosives.
Peter Madsen fængslet efter grundlovsforhør: 11 dramatiske minutter udløste 6 sigtelser (DR.dk, Oct. 21, 2020)

I assume he will be moved to a more secure prison. And he is bound to lose his workshop privileges where he made small model submarines and rockets - and probably the fake gun and bomb belt. According to a friend of his, access to the workshop was the only thing that made his life worth living, so he will now have all the time in the world to regret the murder of Kim Wall.

Peter Madsens mentalerklæring: Så farlig er han (BT, Oct. 20, 2020)
Peter Madsen's : This is how dangerous he is

The article contains quotations from the forensic psychiatric assessment of him, which was used in court. I don't have the time to translate it all, but here is a slightly improved Google translation:

From the prosecutor's conclusion:
There is no doubt that he is dangerous. He presents an imminent and significant danger to the lives and well-being of other people.
(...)
This sinister and macabre murder case is quite unique. We are dealing with a cynical, calculating and deliberating sex killer that leaves no room for doubt. Life imprisonment is the most appropriate punishment, and if it that is not an option, it should be forvaring*.
*Forvaring is a concept in Scandinavian juris prudence usually reserved for criminals who are considered to be particularly dangerous. Unlike an ordinary life sentence, it may mean that the prisoner actually stays behind bars for the rest of his life, i.e. for as long as he (or she) is considered a danger to other people's lives or well-being.

Based on the assessment by a psychologist and two forensic psychiatrists:
He sat quietly in the chair and showed a tendency to try to hold the psychologist's gaze. Several times during the investigation, he praised the psychologist, which the psychologist interpreted as "a fairly obvious attempt to create an alliance".
(...)
“He is trying to control the conversation, which is about himself and his exploits. He considers himself to be an intellectual, but his actual skill of reflection is extremely limited. He gives the impression of being honest, but appears to be self-staging and unreliable about information about himself and he is trying hard to appear to be harmless."
As a part of the examination, Peter Madsen was tested to have an IQ of 111.

Not exactly the Hannibal-Lecter-evil-genius Ievel of IQ. It probably reflects that he is more or less self-taught without much formal education.
"Considers himself to be an intellectual" reminds me of Adrian Mole.

The series about the investigation of the case will be streamed in North America:

HBO has acquired North American TV and streaming rights to a Scandinavian limited series about an infamous murder case.

The Investigation, set to premiere Feb. 1 on HBO and HBO Max, tracks the events surrounding the 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.
HBO Snags Limited Series Based on Danish Submarine Murder (HollywoodReporter, Jan . 4, 2020)

Watched it last week.

Really great series, though it actaully doesn't go into much detail about the incident itself - it's very much focused on the people (Police and the Wall family) and the process, in particular the search for Kim Wall's remains by the diving teams.

How close to reality it is - I have no idea - but it's a lovely bit of TV (in my opinion of course)

I admired the way it never showed Madsen or even mentioned his name. He was just 'the suspect' or 'the accused'.

Drabsdømte Peter Madsen får nej til Højesteret i kærestebrev-sag (EkstraBladet.dk, Aug 11, 2025)
Convicted murderer Peter Madsen gets a 'No!' from the Supreme Court in a case about love letters

For the first ten years of their sentence, convicts with life sentences are not allowed to write letters to people they had no relationship with before they were arrested. In this case, the letters were sent to a woman to whom he was engaged at one point, but he didn't know her before his arrest in 2017.
She later married the currently best-known right-wing extremist in Denmark, Rasmus Paludan, whose speciality is to burn Qurans outside of mosques and embassies of Islamic countries in Denmark and Sweden. He's a citizen of both countries.
I think I met her once at a salsa event in Copenhagen. A friend of hers, another right-wing extremist, is an avid (but not very good) salsa dancer.
The world of fascists is weird!
