A broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barret
OK, did some checking, and here is the possibilities, at least in cruising in conjunction with the TAM4.
Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruises both offer 3 and 4 night cruises from Los Angeles. The 4-night cruise leaves on Monday evening at 5:30PM and returns Friday at 8:00am. The 3 night cruises leave Friday afternoon and return on Monday morning. The destinations are pretty much the same, Catalina Island and Ensenda, Mexico, with the 4-night cruises giving you an extra day at sea. Both are large cruiseships, about 70,000 Tons and carry about 2,000+ passengers, so getting 50 or so Forumites there shouldn't be a great problem (OTOH, it might not be a big enough crowd to help with getting the rates lower).
Costs on Expedia.com is from $209-$279 per person, depending on date and ship. Given that a lot of cruise lines charge between 150%to 200% for single cruisers, finding a roommate is of paramount importance.
So the way I figure it, we'd have to decide:
(1) If we are going before or after TAM. I would vote after, but that can be discussed.
(2) Get to and from LA to Vegas (either car caravan or air flight, estimated ticket cost is $95-$114 R/T LA to Vegas)
(3) Get to the Port of LA. Again, car caravan or other means (if this actually happens, I may have an idea on that)
I encourage everybody who is actually thinking along these lines to check out both the Carnival and Royal Caribbean sites.
If the decision is a trip sometime else in the year and from another port, I'm willing to do some checking there, but it will probably be more costly and lose us our foreign contingent.
So, what do you think?
