Duppyraces had the excellent suggestion of having TAM on a cruise ship. OK maybe a small cruise ship! Maybe we could share a ship with some Scientologists and have a big food fight, or something else fun.

So skepchicks in bikinis? Skepdudes in thongs (well maybe not).

I think Duppy has a great idea!

You know, if there is a nice ship about the right size, that is appealing.

At least more appealing than Lost Wages. :(

But please, have it when I'm NOT having a standards meeting. So far I'm 2 for 2 in standards meetings vs. TAM's. :(

(grumble, standards are such fun. got to some nice place. sit in a room from 8am to 9pm, and have people scream at you because they wish you and your organization weren't present...)

Not a bad idea. People would run into each other more often and get to know one another better. No splitting up and going off to different restaurants around town and if cruising southern waters, the weather decks would be pleasant. And we could give the crew the Captain Stubbing two fingered salute. Unlike the one fingered salutes I got from the skepdudes when I'd go back to the room with Suezoled.

LOL, I was just about to post that it would be impossible because someone will be complaining of seasickness before I am able to post this. I went and looked, and I was right. :) You know, they have these really great magnetic bracelets that make seasickness go away...

wow magnetic bracelets!

What about those wrist band things that do accupressure?

I just read this....

we cruise through the BERMUDA TRIANGLE!!!!

Is that a skeptic cruise of WHAT???

THen we would HAVE to have Larry Krusche, who wrote a book debunking the Bermuda Triangle and Flight 19!!!

Man, can you see it? Cruise the Bermuda Triangle with fellow skepics. If there is a GOD, He will have to sink us!!!!

It would just be too good to pass up!

More thoughts for a cruise:

Bermuda triangle and the mysterious Sargasso Sea... cool biology at least. I believe Atlantis has been sited around those parts as well...

Or in the pacific we could visit the Galapgos for biology-- and then Easter Island for mystery (and excellent surf :D).

Sport fishing allowed from the fantail?

As it has been pointed out, the nice thing about a cruise ship is that it (sorta) enforces community. Blues cruises and jazz cruises are fairly common. One of our watchmakers takes the yearly blues cruise at this time of year (I think it's coordinated with the topless collegiate cheerleader cruise ) and claims it's wonderful.

I'm not worried about the seasickness issue -- I'm worried about the norwalk virus(es) in the drinking water. I think my luggage would consist of a digital camera, laptop, basic clothes, enough MRE's to last the duration, and four cases of bottled water. Still, it's intriguing enough for me to consider.

Though I think it was Mark Twain who compared an ocean cruise to prison with the very real chance of drowning. At least I can swim.

Maybe you could convince them to have a standards meeting on a cruise ship! The same weekend as TAM, and slip out the door to the fun in the other meeting rooms. :p

Not to throw cold water on a hot idea, but I've cruised some (4 trips) and there are two problems with TAM at sea I see:

1. Most cruise ships are in-port early in the morning and back out in the evening, so you'd give up any opportunity to get off the ship. And 500-700 people won't fill a cruise ship these days, they usually board 1200-2500 people.

2. Cruise ships seldom have anything like conference facilities, they have a lounge and often a movie theatre, but neither are large enough or suitable for meetings.

So I am afraid this wouldn't do. But a 3/4-day JREF Forum cruise from LA after the TAM one year might be interesting...Carivan and Royal Carribean run 3/4 night cruises from LA...hmmmmmm

Seasick? No worries. I'm seastrong as an old salt myself, but there are three (other) categories onboard a ship that never get seasick: Those at the helm, those who are sleeping, and those who are drunk. So, Zep and others, while hopefully not allowed near the helm, should have no problem alternating between #2 and #3. Should an occasional hangover interceed, it is indistinguishable from seasickness anyhow.

I've been on a cruise, and it was like walking on solid ground. A bit disappointing, actually...

As much as I'd like everyone to cruise up to Bermuda in January(then you could pick me up and I could show you around) a cruise should definately go south to Puerto Rico or the BVI. January is a tad chilly in the Triangle. At least with Vegas you're indoors most of the time.

Maybe a summer cruise. TAM 4-and-a-half? ;)

we could have a dinner/dance with a costume theme.

Favorite character from the "love boat"

or

"favorite person/ship lost in the Bermuda Triangle"

I would go as the alien beeming them all up!
