Ed The JD Vance thread

Vance is being controlled by a bunch of rich Theo-Bros.
They won't launch the nukes, but they would totally privatize them.

Given his family background (he's a direct descendant of the Hatfields) and his own personal history, I have a very hard time believing Vance's stories of childhood poverty.

While it's true his mother had addiction problems and his childhood held a lot of trauma, it's not true that he lived in poverty. His family was middle-class.

I ask because I have seen interviews with Vance before he took up politics, andhe seem pretty intelligent.
So, yeah, I tend to think most of it is an act to please the MAGA crowd.
And Vance has really wants to make people forget his criticism of Trump before he turned to politics.

Just goes to show that people are complex, and that intelligent people can be really stupid at the same time. Take Elon Musk; he's both a genius and an idiot.

I'd like to see the long-form birth certificate just to be sure.

Is there evidence that catching the rocket was actually Elon's idea?

I understand that it's because the rocket is too big for landing legs, but was it actually Elon himself who came up with the chopstick solution to that problem? Or was it the engineers who worked at SpaceX?

If this book is to be believed, it was his idea:

Musk's biographer tweets the pages from his book discussing how in late 2020 Musk suggested, then insisted against considerable opposition from his engineers, that Superheavy be caught with chopsticks instead of landing on legs like Falcon 9.

(If this sounds familiar, also according to the book, Musk is the person who suggested and, against considerable opposition from his engineers, insisted on Starship switching to stainless steel instead of carbon fiber.)

On the Joe Rogan show Vance made this monumentally stupid statement about DEI and trans people:

White, middle class parents are allowing their children to undergo sex changes because it makes it easier to get into an Ivy League university, JD Vance has claimed.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the Republican vice-presidential candidate said gender transition could provide routes into schools like Harvard and Yale through what he claimed was the “DEI [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] bureaucracy in this country”.

Mr Vance said: “If you are a middle class or upper middle class, white parent and the only thing you care about is whether your child goes into Harvard or Yale, obviously that pathway has become a lot harder for a lot of upper middle class kids.

“But the one way those people can participate in the DEI bureaucracy in this country is to be trans.”

He added: “Is there a dynamic that’s going on where if you become trans that’s the way to reject your white privilege? That’s the only social signifier, the only one that is available in the hyper-woke mindset, if you become gender non-binary.”

I'm pretty sure middle class parents are worrying about things other than whether their child gets into Harvard or Yale. If that's "the only thing they care about", they have issues.
It reminds me of that whole "just borrow money from your family to start a business" thing that some politician said a few years ago.
