Ed The JD Vance thread

I'm reading that the whole Haitian immigrants eating cats in Springfield thing started with one person, who was not an immigrant, who was not in Springfield, who wasn't Haitian, but who did apparently kill and eat a cat.

No source, so I'm not going to even present this as true.

I saw this article from HuffPost a couple of days ago, and didn't think that much of it at the time- in the face of so many lies from Trump/Vance what's one more, and it just seemed like the sort of thing that was so outrageously absurd that I was sure even Trump wouldn't give it wings. Boy, did I understimate him. Anyway, a few excerpts from the article:

Springfield, Ohio, has been a hub for immigrants, and particularly Haitian immigrants, in recent years — contrary to Vance’s tweet, they are here legally — but there’s no evidence at all for these viral claims.

In fact, Springfield’s deputy director of public safety and operations, Jason Via, dispelled the rumors to NPR last month.

“I think it’s sad that some people are using this as an opportunity to spread hate or spread fear,” Via told NPR. “We get these reports ‘the Haitians are killing ducks in a lot of our parks’ or ‘the Haitians are eating vegetables right out of the aisle at the grocery store.’ And we haven’t really seen any of that. It’s really frustrating. As a community, it’s not helpful as we try to move forward.”
...
A separate story does involve alleged animal cruelty to a pet cat — but no apparent connection to immigration.

Nearly three hours away from Springfield, in Canton, Ohio, Allexis Telia Ferrell, 27, faces one charge of causing serious physical harm to a companion animal, a fifth-degree felony. Last month, police accused Ferrell of killing a cat, and also eating it “in a residential area in front of multiple people,” according to local outlet WLBT. Edited body camera footage of Ferrell’s arrest has circulated online, including from the popular far-right Malaysia-based commentator Ian Miles Cheong.

A spokesperson for the Canton Police Department, Lt. Dennis Garren, shared records related to Ferrell’s arrest with HuffPost. None of them mentioned the defendant’s citizenship status, though they did detail the grisly allegations against her. One offense report stated: “The Defendant did torture, kill, and eat a cat in a residental [sic] area in front multiple people.”
...
Garren added, responding to a question about whether there had been any other animal cruelty reports recently: “We have no additional reports in the recent weeks.” Regarding Ferrell’s citizenship status, Garren said, “I could not confirm if she is but I haven’t heard that she is not a U.S. citizen.”

"You can't make this **** up" is one of those things people say that has become obsolete and archaic when it comes to MAGA and what they will make up or say.

For me, the strangest thing about Vance is his multiple name changes. Who does that?

Over the course of his 39 years, Vance’s first, middle and last names have all been altered in one way or another. As Vance is being introduced to voters across the country as Donald Trump’s new running mate, his name has been the source of both curiosity and questions — including why he no longer uses periods in JD. He was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio, on Aug. 2, 1984, his middle and last names the same as his biological father, Donald Bowman. His parents split up “around the time I started walking,” he writes. When he was about 6, his mother, Beverly, married for the third time. He was adopted by his new stepfather, Robert Hamel, and his mother renamed him James David Hamel.

Vance spent more than two decades as James David “J.D.” Hamel. It’s the name by which he graduated from Middletown High School, served in Iraq as a U.S. Marine (officially, Cpl. James D. Hamel), earned a political science degree at The Ohio State University and blogged his ruminations as a 26-year-old student at Yale Law School...[Then] he decided to change his name again, to Vance — the last name of his beloved Mamaw, the grandmother who raised him. It didn’t happen on his wedding day in 2014, as his book implies, but in April 2013, as he was about to graduate from Yale, Van Kirk said. Associated Press article link

When Vance entered politics -- just over three years ago -- he removed the periods from J. D. and became JD. His campaign staff has explained he did it because "it was how Vance preferred to be referred to in print." Most media, if not all, have honored his request.

You imagine if a Democrat had done something like this? The reaction from trump, emptyg and Bobo?

Vance is claiming that the "Haitians eating pets" has not been disproved. That people are calling him and telling him this is happening. What he doesn't say is that none of them are first hand accounts. It's always "Someone told me" and "I heard".

Oh no, now the RNC is going to pay some poor Haitians to eat cats while they film it, aren't they? "See? It's true! We have video!"

“We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans,”

so that was said by jd vance of taylor swift. as the running mate to donald trump, that was said.

Could Vance be a Dem plant to undermine Trump's campaign? :p

Resolved: There are some twenty-somethings who get their voting instructions from Taylor Swift.

There are many more voters who get their voting instructions from a 34X convicted felon, sexual abuser, serial adulterer, pathological liar, and authoritarian wanna-be who admires Putin, Kim, and Orban. People are weird.

I'm pretty sure the bulk of Swift's fandom isn't eligible to vote.

On what do you base this pretty surety? Don't you normally challenge people to provide data to back up assertions of this nature?

Most of the Taylor Swift fans I know are in their forties, but I don't really know that many people so I wouldn't have ventured to make a guess as to the demographics.

well you're over here acting like it's the wiggles.

anyway that wasn't even the good part of the jd vance quote.

Someones cat went missing and never returned.

There doesn't seem like a whole lot of people who are undecided or apolitical. I don't think her endorsement will do much for people over the age of 35 or so.

But she has such a strong following (remind you of anyone?) that it could make a difference. I do believe that it could be significant for younger voters and unregistered. I don't think it's that far off to call it voting instructions. No matter how you slice it, it can't get more 50/50 now if polls are to be trusted. If it makes the difference in November, I'm all for it.

Trump was asked about Swift's endorsement today, and said words to the effect "I like Brittany better, and I think she'll [Swift] suffer for it in the marketplace". At first I was like, huh? Britney Spears? Okay that's possible I guess. But he was talking about Patrick Mahomes wife.
