Ah question. Why the **** is Steve Bannon still walking around free?

And don't tell me "There's a process." If he was a black guy selling loose cigarettes cops would have given him 57 warning shots by now.

There is a LOT of people walking around with warrants. A small portion of police resources are used for going around and trying to bring people in on warrants.

That's not their only option. Yes, that warrant would be coming from DoJ but that doesn't mean Congress can't act as well.

While they can, the answer to why they won't is they haven't done it in 100 years and they are not going to start today.

Numerous boeberts and greenes are tweeting the US declaration of independence as law and precedent for the insurrection. The tyranny bit. There was no constitution at the time. It is equivalent to a declaration of war not law.

Let us recall when NPR twitter posted the DOI in multiple (twitter limited) posts on July 4th and Trumpians insisted it was a manifesto against their dear leader.

They're also openly saying they should kill people and getting applause breaks for it.

It isn't like this is coming from nowhere. If elections really were being stolen with overwhelming evidence of it, then overthrowing the government would be a logical conclusion even if it had to be done at least in part with violence. People like Kirk and Boebert and Greene and Carlson and Trump can't tell these lies to people and expect them not to act on them. The consequences are just too great to not put in due diligence before making allegations, and these people are outright lying after being shown it isn't true.

The Republican party is a murder cult.

The best thing that can be said about the GOP is that, for now, it intends to steal elections instead of just killing the opposition.
That's their generous compromise.

I don't know. Most Pro life people don't act like the murder rate is 50x the actual rate in the US. Most Christians don't act like eternal damnation exists. I don't know how they think.

During the disputes following the 2000 election, I saw people claim that the election had made the US a laughing stock around the world. I pointed out that there were a number of countries where an election like that would have been resolved by one side leading troops and tanks into the capital, so there was really nothing to laugh about. At least we're still not at that level. Yet.

That's a good point. Most don't actually behave as if their stated beliefs are their actual beliefs in many cases. I've been pretty vocal about not relying too heavily on self reporting for people's beliefs and motivations.

The problem is it doesn't have to be 'most' of them behaving in accordance with their stated beliefs for horrible outcomes to come to pass. Some 'pro-life' people have bomb clinics and murdered doctors to 'stop the murder of babies'. Some people who believed Trump et al 'great replacement' arguments shot up Wal-Mart and synagogues. Threats of violence against election workers is making good, nonpartisan acting professionals to leave and people who have stated they will cheat to fill the gaps.

And here these people already attacked the Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power. They'll kill again. They'll destroy our institutions if we let them.

2024. But the military will support the GOP steal.

A bit late to this party but, Popehat was saying that DoJ might not make a move until the civil case plays out. The way he explained it made sense, and I highly doubt I'd do it just. The impression I got is that if they hold off until there's some form of ruling by any of the courts, it would make everything easier.

Okay well that all sounds exactly like more "Any day now"-ing.

Maybe /shrug take it as you will, I guess. I view them differently, but I understand not everyone does. If you're actually interested in Popehat's explanation I'd encourage you to listen to the podcast on KCRW's ATPL website. It's in the most recent episode. Like I said, I didn't even give a decent cursory explanation, but he gives the reasons.

As long as attempting to seize power had no real consequences for those at the top, you will be there eventually.

I think you probably don't realise how bloody close to that you got.

Trump was very busy in the few weeks before Jan 6 installing his own sycophants and lackeys into the hierarchy of the Pentagon, in places where he would have a better chance of getting control of the military. I shudder to think what might have happened if he had taken the next two logical steps.

1. Firing Mark Milley and installing a Trump-friendly Flag Officer as head of the Joint Chiefs.

2. Firing Jeffrey Rosen and Richard O'Donohue as acting and deputy acting AG respectively, and appointing Jeffrey Clark, who had written to the AG Rosen and insisted he announce the DoJ was investigating massive election fraud.

Trump just didn't have enough time, intelligence or wherewithal to get the job done... But he and his fellow wannabe seditionists have now created the blueprint, and unless there are some severe consequences for those people involved, they will simply regard it as a dress rehearsal to shake out the flaws. The won't make the same mistakes next time, and even if its not Trump, if they get someone who is really smart, such as Josh Hawley, into the presidency, you can kiss your democracy goodbye.

Josh Hawley scares the **** out of me. Whereas others of his ilk such as Taylor-Greene, Boebert, Gosar and Cawthorne are just dumb-**** carnival barkers, Hawley is the real deal - he's smart, intelligent and well educated - he is also a genuine right-wing, ultra-conservative scumbag... and that is a very, very dangerous combination!
