The History Channel and "Ancient Technologies"

I suffered through one of those History Channel efforts last night, one of their "ancient technologies" series. They seem to be currently hung up on stuff like death machines, torture devices, and the like.
This one dealt, supposedly in a "scientific" manner, with a variety of Chinese weapons and techniques associated with various eras and Kung Fu styles.

Absolute rot, for the most part. Recounting "ancient" legends and beliefs, they set about (rather like Biblical literalists) to show how they might be true.
Some of the stuff was alright, a section on the rarely-seen "meteor ball" was actually decent.
Then they got into Dim Mak.

Their "expert" was some Englishman who has studied various kung fu forms for some time. Evidently, English speaking Chinese masters are hard to come by. We got the standard stuff on chi, meridians, and the like, and explanations of how the Dim Mak strikes would "obstruct" ones meridians and cause your chi to get all clogged up and we know how bad that is....
Then, for some odd reason (likely because there was no way to actually demonstrate clogging...) they veered off into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and demonstrated how a properly-applied carotid artery strangle would render someone unconscious. Wow! What a revelation! The point was, we were told, that the pressure applied to the arteries is THE VERY SAME spot someone would apply the "death touch".

Then, our Englishman took the whole thing down several notches further, showing how his well developed ability to "flow" his chi could prevent him from being injured when....

Let's all say it together....

CONCRETE BLOCKS were broken while they lay on his chest!

I don't know if the producers of these shows are merely credulous dolts or they simply don't care what drivel they put out.

That show has ups and downs... I saw one on ancient large ships which seemed OK. Lots of speculations, but no woo.

I happened to see (parts of) that ancient weapons episode last night before falling asleep. Well, it was one of the major downs. IMHO its one of those "OK, we run out of good stuff" episodes every single series has.

But hey, its the History Channel, where you can always find high-quality educative stuff such as UFO Hunters, Monster Quest, etc...

I liked how the medical expert who studied the stuff explained how it might work, and then the cut back to the chi guy, as if they were related.

This gave me one weird RPG idea. That Carnie's are all masters of secret kung fu knowledge.

Maybe something like Carnivale with kung fu...

Are we talking about the same show? The only show I saw about Ancient Technologies on the History Channel had no woo. It was pure technology with a little bit of speculation thrown in. I don't even know. They tend to have 20,000 series with the same premise that tends to be pretty cool.

Nah... It was pure laziness. If they really cared about Ancient Technology they could have done some cool stuff with Chinese Paper Armor.

I've always found it an interesting documentary series, but it does have its share of loonies from time to time, and they tend to get a fairly easy ride.

I though that one about the large ships was ok as well, but I particularly liked the one about the ‘Greek fire’ with the flame thrower and accent mines (I think that was part of the same series). I must admit I started watching the one mentioned in the OP with the meteor ball but must have fallen asleep when they got to the Chia pet, oops, I mean Chi part.

Bikewer,

I saw that same episode. You forgot their discussion of the "delayed death touch," where a doctor explained if you ruptured someone's spleen, it could cause death in several days. What I got out of that is if you hit someone hard enough in the right spot, they might die after a little while. <sarcasm/on> I'm glad I can get these facts from the History Channel! <sarcasm/off>

Further "investigations" pointed out that, in fact, pointed objects could be used to kill people -- even in a stealthy manner. That's some hard-hitting fact finding.

Man, the History Channel is bad. Modern Marvels is pretty neat, but everything else I've seen is bad. Don't get me started on MonsterQuest.

Yeah, I like Modern Marvels too, but early in the morning History Classroom and Histories Lost and Found are some of my favorites while getting ready for work (or when I’m off). However overall I still prefer (most times) the Discover Channel or even sometimes Animal Planet.

ETA: Oh I forgot to mention “Ice road Truckers”, “Dogfights”, “Battle 360” and “Axe Men”

Yep.
"Dogfights" rocks. It compensates the woo at "UFO Hunters". I just think it could also have some focus on the Axis's pilots (as well as NV and NK) achievments, ideologies apart.

"Hero Ships" (not sure if this is the right name) is cool also.

are you people doubting "chi" or did i get that wrong?

I opt for credulous dolts who don't care what drivel they put out.:D:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp

Some Allies other than Americans would be nice, too. There were one or two spectacular barneys in the Battle of Britain, for example.
