I always thought that was the biblical argument against polygamy (though there's ample evidence in the bible to support polygamy as well...)
I've never heard it that way; interesting! In my church(es), it was always used the way RT suggests. Christians and non-Christians should not be married, as it will cause friction and strife and could lead the Christian to reject God to make hir spouse happy.
'Course, there was plenty of friction and strife in my former household of two Christians, so once again, that "wisdom" fails.
