Merged The Disturbences in Ferguson Missouri...

Yes, congratulations to those who risked themselves trying to stop the looting. Brave.
I'm not convinced yet. Where were the brave ones when the looting was actually occurring, and where were the police? I suspect the "brave ones" showed up when the looters were gone or on their way out, then showed up to claim the glory.

We aren't that far apart, (Globally speaking) I shop over there with some regularity. The closest Toys R Us, Harbor Freight and Crispy Cream are all right there. I've bought gas at the Ex-Quick Trip (That was only a year or so old, by the way, and Quick Trip has said they have no plans on replacing it ether.) and shopped in the Walmart, Dollar Tree and Big Lots that are also right there. Up the road in Flo Valley (Cross Keys Plaza), was my primary stomping grounds, some 35 plus years ago. So I know the area too.
You get off 270 at Washington? I'm in Florissant.

We need an MLK to lead people in a nonviolent protest. If the issue is change in police response, he'd have gotten the whole country behind him.

"rip (...) whole country apart" unlikely when other stuff which were more clear cut did nothing of the sort. The 60ies civil right fights, Rodney kind etc.... DId not exactely split the country apart and they were far more clear cut.

As for the looting, people are reacting as if it was *all* the protester which did this as a reaction.

The reality is probably more nuanced and I am betting my shirt that it was mostly opportunistic people which saw the time was right for a good ole' looting.

It's always opportunists who start the looting. All it takes is knowing the cops are absent/occupied and mob mentality.

Peddling the Fox News "All the protestors are thugs" line, I see.Given your posting history, not surprising.

First, care to cite on Fox News "All the protestors are thugs" ?

Second, complete strawman and misrepresentation of my post. Given your posting history, not surprising.

OK, I should have modified that from Fox News to Hannity, since Sean has been presenting this in black and white terms all week.
And you seem to have not seen the photos of demonstrators confronting the looters. that you dismissed this as a hoax without any checking says plenty about you and your biases.

I've been concerned about police militarization for a long time, and now it finally seems that the problem is more widely recognized by people of many different political stripes. So I have a sense of optimism as we may have reached a turning point. If we're not galvanized into immediate action, at least it seems that a broader set of the population has recognized that this issue cannot be ignored and will not just go away.

Joe Scarborough apparently commented that Wesley Lowery and Ryan Reilly (the reporters arrested in the McDonalds) should have been quicker to cooperate with the police. Lowery slammed Scarborough on CNN for being a smug prick who makes pronouncements from his studio in NYC without knowing what he's talking about. These idiot talking heads really need to be ignored.

I have a sick, sick, feeling this could quite literally rip not just Ferguson but this whole country apart. Already the extremists on both sides seem to taking over the debate.
Sure, for sufficiently large values of "tear the country apart".

I don't think Ferguson will tear the country apart any more than the Rodney King riots did, or Selma did, or Katrina did, or the Great Depression did, or Vietnam did. Hell, even outright secession and civil war didn't manage to truly tear the country apart, and we're probably never going to see anything like that ever again. The nation has always been divided on a host of issues--this isn't something new in Ferguson.

I admit I now think it is a problem.
I think we have to be careful about what we do...we can't disarm the police entirely,if criminals have automatic weapons the police have to have equal firepower...but military grade weaponary should be confined to a small unit that is trained in how to use it rather then issuing it to every single cop. Keep it to the SWAT teams.
ANd you can go too far in the other direction...cops wearing body armor does not particulary concern me...ordinary cops carrying M 16's without proper training does.

You think Scarborough is bad,get a load of Hannity, for whom the Jefferson Police can do no wrong.

And now apparently the police just stood by and let the looters loot last night....

Jesus H Christ, is it so freaking hard to fight a medium way between what we saw last week and letting rioters run wild?\

I am beginning to think that St Louis..and maybe Missouri in general..law enforcement have nothing but idiots in charge.

Yes, finally there are some politicians speaking out, but we need a lot more. IMO, the problem has always been the "tough on crime" mentality that permeates not only the government, but the citizens who have embraced it on election day and vote for more. Like you said, there are some good signs. A couple of weeks ago at early voting there were a bunch of judges and their support people campaigning in the parking lot, and many of their flyers pointed out ways the various judges had engaged in alternatives to locking people up. This is a refreshing change from the hanging judge mentality, and perhaps a reflection of our times and the human toll of the "war on drugs", which I believe is the root cause of the militarization of law enforcement. My congressman Steve Cohen spoke out against militarization a couple of days ago (at least we agree on something :)) and I plan to contact him and express support. The best way to get started would be to cut off federal money that is used to support militarization, IMO.

That you accused Fox of this then backtracked says plenty about you and your biases.

Still can't discuss this intellegently without your bias I see. First, I did not dismiss this as a hoax. I said I'm not convinced YET. I saw one video of the brave ones milling around in front of the store. No confronting. But hey, it's your claim -- support it and convince me, you see I'm open to the facts, unlike you.

Govnernor just declared a curfew for downtown Ferguson.

Not much choice after last night.

Demonstartions will be allowed in daylight hours, but not after dark.

Seems to be reasonable to me.

Governor of Missouri is being shouted down by the "no justice no peace" types.

"All Thngs Fall Apart,The Center Cannot Hold"....

And now a business owner and one of the "protestors" are yelling at each other. This is not going to end well.
