The DeSantis gambit

You think the character will be dressed wearing an SS uniform or maybe just DeSantis's imperial wizard costume from his local Klavern? And considering this is the Deep South, it just might help ticket sales.

Disney movie ticket sales and Disney+ subscriptions are down. Do you think that's because audiences think they aren't being sufficiently political? Do you think becoming more political will improve their general appeal? Not just in the deep south, mind you, but across the country and even internationally.

What losses? Your link says they actually increased revenue.

Because of their parks, which are still rebounding post-covid. Not from movies and certainly not from Disney+. Recall that it was movies and Disney+ that dudalb was talking about, not the parks.

If you are referring to streaming subscriptions, that seems to be an industry issue, not just Disney. And Iger was brought back late last year to address that.

And do you think taking digs at DeSantis by portraying him in shows and movies is how Iger is going to do that? Do you think that would work?

Do you think Disney movie ticket sales and subscriptions are down more, or the same as, the industry averages?

Do you think that Disney's movies and tv shows are overly political?

I mean, we did just have a Floridian GOP Representative compare themselves to the Empire in Star Wars so maybe you guys have just been missing out on the symbolism in Marvel and Star Wars that's been there since the beginning?

Is it political to be humane? Is it political to attempt to be more diverse in its appeal?

Disney movie tickets are down. Is that because of their welcoming of gays and characters in movies that are too diverse? Or is it because movie ticket sales in general are down?

Should movies reflect the entire spectrum of humanity or should all the characters be white and straight?

Is Disney being too political or just not hateful enough? Should the happiest place on earth replace Gay pride day with Fusion nightclub reenactments and cross burnings?

I think these statements from DeSantis reveal his anti-LGBTQ+ agenda:

“You know, one of the things we’re doing – you know, we’re just nixing this whole idea of teachers saying, ‘Choose your pronouns. Like we never used to do that, so we’re just not going to do it in Florida schools. And we’re going to do normal school like everyone did for the whole history of our country until like two hours go.”

His use of 'normal' says so much: anyone who doesn't want to be referred to by the pronouns their genitalia apparently dictates isn't 'normal'.

"Normal" must mean hiding/ignoring/pretending anything that isn't cisgender.

School segregation was also 'normal' for most of FL's history. Perhaps he'd like to go back to that, too?

Widespread racial desegregation of Florida's public schools, including those in Volusia County, was finally achieved in the fall of 1970, but only after the Supreme Court set a firm deadline and Governor Claude Kirk's motion to stay the Court's desegregation order was rejected.

DeSantis is a bigoted putz.

I think that is next on his Agenda.

I see De Santis has become your new Dear Leader, replacing formed Dear Leader Trump.
You hate Disney because Disney does not bow down and worship Dear Leader.

I don't hate Disney. I just spent two days enjoying Disney theme parks. I think they've made a number of unforced errors lately, though, both in getting into politics in ways that don't serve their shareholders and in mismanaging the Marvel and Star Wars franchises. But that's hardly hate.

Is it political to be humane?

It's political to support or oppose specific legislation. And companies have a right to do that. It's not axiomatically wrong. But it's not always a good idea, particularly if that legislation doesn't have any direct bearing on their business. This legislation didn't.

It's because quality is down. There's nothing wrong with diversity, but if you do that at the expense of good story telling, that is a problem. Nobody likes Captain Marvel, not because she's a woman but because she's a dour, dull, unfun character with no development. She's just a "girl boss".

Or is it because movie ticket sales in general are down?

That's not helping, but there's really no denying that quality has gone down

Movies should tell good stories. Diversity is fine, but it cannot substitute for a good story.

Quite possibly.

Do you think that would help reverse their losses?

Perhaps it's nothing to do with DeSantis, Florida, or even the USA...

The drop in Disney+ subscribers — which was bigger than analysts expected — was entirely driven by a 3.8 million sequential decline at Disney+ Hotstar, the version of the service offered in India and parts of Southeast Asia, to stand at 161.8 million at the end of 2022. Last year, Disney lost streaming rights to Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches, which prompted it to lower growth targets for Disney+ Hotstar in India.

How do you know it didn’t?

It might not have an immediate impact. Just like Kristallnacht didn't have an immediate impact on non-Jews in Germany. But eventually everyone is affected.

I agree. One has nothing to do with the other. And yet, DeSantis specifically points out the diversity.

I'd say that is true about movies in general. For the most part I hate the MCU and the comic book movies. There is no nuance to any of the characters. Yet the most profitable movies these days are these movies.

Movies should tell good stories. Diversity is fine, but it cannot substitute for a good story.

I agree. But there is no reason they can't do both. Still, DeSantis attacks any effort at diversity.

What justifies removing Disney's special privileges is that they shouldn't have had them in the first place. Leftists used to recognize that. They're only trying to defend those privileges now to stick it to DeSantis, they can't justify them on their own terms.

After 50 years in Florida, the state government finally cares about the Mouse's "special privileges," and this has nothing to do with an anti-gay agenda. Really. You're serious with this.

Whatever you're imbibing, share it with the rest of us. The colors must be amazing.

Good thing he is becoming a joke. Back to Trump and Biden.

DeSantis is done being a governor 2026. By 2028 forgotten.

I fully suspect that there will be an effort made in the GOP to come up with another "Not Trump" caindidate, since nominating Trump again very likely to end in disaster.

EmptyG had her arse kicked by her own team the other day. Boebert self-pwned in spectacular fashion. DeSantis is losing a fight with a cartoon mouse. The Orange Anus is facing multiple criminal charges...

If the GOP are smart, and everything says the core factions are (Hi Mitch!), I certainly hope in the near future I can say "Dubalb was right".
