The DeSantis gambit

Well, no. The problem isn't that they oppose Trump. It's that opposing Trump is the only thing they do. Do you get the distinction? Seriously, would you consider someone who only opposed Biden to be a Democrat in anything other than name? They aren't advocating for Democrat positions, they aren't promoting any other Democrat politicians, they aren't opposing any Republican politicians, all they do is oppose Biden. How does that make them a Democrat?

Not necessarily, sure. But seriously, what does it even mean to be a Republican if that's the only thing you're doing? People keep objecting that being anti-Trump doesn't make them RINO's, but the one thing nobody is putting forth is an argument for what DOES make them Republican. And the reason is because the Lincoln Project does nothing else.

As their name suggests, I think it's clearly a case of liberal moderates wanting to take their party back from the Trumpers. If Biden was to Democrats what Trump is to Republicans, for instance if he was a lying, grifting POS who tried to get his zombies to attack the Capitol after losing an election? Then I wouldn't call the Lincoln Project equivalent opposition to Biden "DINO" at all.

They call themselves the Lincoln Project, not the Lincoln Party.

I wouldn't consider them moderates. The only difference between Trump and his predecessors within the party is that Trump will shout the racist stuff from the rooftops, whereas his predecessors will do all the racist stuff but keep very quiet about it.

I found this a very insightful comparison between Trump and DeSantis:

the way i tend to think of it is that both trump and desantis are very cruel, but trump is more of the “popular jerk” variety and desantis is more of the “possibly a school shooter” variety

I tend to agree. Trump is very much a cruel piece of **** to those he deems contemptible, but DeSantis seems to be more of a total misanthrope, which is probably the less relatable personality for most people.

"DeSantis says he will eliminate the Departments of Energy, Education, Commerce, and the IRS if elected President."

Again every Republican idea leads back to "Why even have a government anyway?"

Feels like a throwback. Do Republicans even care about this Libertarian-lite stuff anymore? They like muscular government if they are in control of it and wielding it like a cudgel against their many enemies.

Plenty of right-leaning voters may still believe in it. It remains a talking point even if it's belied in practice. Like sound fiscal and foreign policy.

Yeah a lot of the Republican base is still all in on the trite, Regan era "The scariest things you can hear is I'm from the Government and I'm Here to Help" nonsense.

Like, real talk, it makes no sense to us but "The government should only be big enough to stop the government government from getting any bigger" would sell, and sell well, as a message to a lot of people on the Right.

I don't know if it's AS bad as their going on in all Christian nationalism or destroying democracy or living a post fact world or... racism. Or sexism. Or homophobia. Or just, so, so much more but it is on the list of ways dealing with them is just impossible.

You aren't thinking like the average MAGA dude. They want the freedom to not pay taxes. They want the freedom to tell women if and when they can have birth control. They want the freedom to have their religious beliefs held sacrosanct in public schools. They want the freedom to discriminate against whatever minority group they feel like.

Basically the want pure governmental freedom because they expect that their churches, their business, their family units, and their social structure will still let them run other people's lives.

That pretty much sums it up.

"Freedom is super, duper important to me if it's the freedom to hurt other people."

I honestly don't know how much clearer we can expect THEM to make it at that point.

From the article:

"If Congress won't go that far, I'm going to use those agencies to push back against woke ideology and against the leftism that we see creeping into all institutions of American life."

What does that even mean?

The more DeSantis speaks, the more he reveals what a total POS he is. Trump is a narcissistic, pathological liar with almost no redeeming qualities, but I can't find a single positive attribute in DeSantis.

Well, that ties in with their "government is scary" belief, even though they have no self-aware sense of irony.

It sounds a lot like they plan on weaponizing federal agencies... now where have I heard that accusation before...

Literal fascism.

Seriously. That's what he's talking about. He's talking about using governmental power to hold some companies and people down for their opposition to the party and empowering those people and companies that support the party.

Trump can convince himself that he actually believes what he is saying. DeSantis doesn't have that conviction.
