The Deluge

I'm here to learn about the way you think. I want you to teach me in the little time I have. All I seem to be getting is misunderstanding and assumptions about what I think of science - how could I possibly not see science as my god as well? and people who haven't given the Bible a fraction of the time that I have telling me how the Bible is just wrong. I need teachers not preachers.
Science as a method but it is very simple.

Claim is made.
Now determine what evidence is needed to FALSIFY the claim.
Evidence is provided to support or falsify claim.
Evidence is determined to be consistent with reality and prior knowledge.
Claim is tested against reality.
Claim is retested again.
Claim is either accepted or rejected.
Claim may be revised or retested again.

But like I've said, science and the bible cannot both be right. If you believe in the bible, then you must believe science is wrong. Why do you still want to learn about it?

Also, why do you feel you have a right to criticize other people's scientific integrity, despite having spent a fraction of the time they have studying science? We don't need preachers either.

.
And yet, when all those contradictions with fact are pointed out to you, you disregard them.
That's -FAITH-, not reason.
Using the bible to verify the bible is absurd.
Using the bible as a kick-off point into the world of refutations, that's applying reason.

I don't understand why you can't get where I'm coming from. It isn't like we are stupid. I can't explain it and you can't understand it. If I went to a foam at the mouth fundi Christian forum I wouldn't get this much attack and preaching. Its ridiculous.

We are using science in a very broad way. I'm not basing my opinion of science on the fact that there is little disagreement between the two, that is hardly surprising.

Also, why do you feel you have a right to criticize other people's scientific integrity, despite having spent a fraction of the time they have studying science? We don't need preachers either.

You are right. Point taken.

No. Science doesn't prove anything to me like it does you. I trust the Bible and you trust science.

You trust science as well. How do you think we're having this conversation? SCIENCE allowed us to invent, develop, and use the internet. Not the bible.

Do you visit the doctor? Do you ever take any medications? That's SCIENCE at work. Nothing in modern medicine was provided through the bible.

You use the bible for its limited purpose, but you rely on SCIENCE for everything else.

Thats nice. Thank you.

So now you've seen why science doesn't agree with the book, what are you going to do?

Posters in this thread have provided examples from Biology, Geology, Physics etc which all show that such a global flood 6000 years ago could not possibly have occurred, will that make you reconsider the possibility that the story of the flood is just a story and not like modern history at all?

They have only showed me - among sermon after sermon - that science is great and awe inspiring, and that science, which can be wrong, disagrees with the flood account. I already knew that.

No. Science doesn't prove anything to me like it does you. I trust the Bible and you trust science.
.
A single scientific discipline which should shout the existence of the Flood fails in every way the story is looked at.
There MUST be a world-wide layer in the strata which makes up the world that shows a world-wide flood in the time alleged.
The science of geology which is advanced enough to find the layer of iridium that indicates the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago can't find diddly about a recent.. (2000 BCE) event of similar scope?
That you won't accept this is blindness to the extreme, and the cause is faith, not reason, not even a lack of education could excuse this.
The truth is out there, yet you find it unpalatable.
You have the beam in your eye.

But here is the problem. That is confirmation bias ie cherry picking.
You have a conclusion. You accept that conclusion as right and accept anything that agrees with that conclusion while rejecting anything that disagrees with it.

Do you see why that is wrong?

Group hug!!!!!!

Ok now let's get back to the original cretinous claim.
It seems to me like David is a Biblical literalist and believes that, when the Biblical accounts and the facts seem to be in contradiction, it must be because the fact are wrong (or, more accurately, because the fact we have are incomplete or we are misreading them).

Am I correct in my summary David?

The Biblical accounts and the facts? You mean the Bible and science, right?

No. Science doesn't prove anything to me like it does you. I trust the Bible and you trust science.

Then will you please get off the Internet? And quit riding in cars and flying in airplanes. Do not visit doctors, and quit eating food grown with modern agricultural methods. Don't listen to CDs or watch DVDs. Don't watch television or go to movies or listen to the radio. Don't even read - printing is the result of a scientific process, especially nowadays when so much goes straight from the computer to the press.

You will have to quit drinking purified water from faucets and using stoves or refrigerators or electricity in any form, including light bulbs. You will also have to move out of your house and go live in a cave - can't have a log cabin because metal axes are the result of science. I guess you could learn the craft of flint-knapping and make your own stone axes, but it seems a tedious way to get a house and I don't know if you could chop down enough trees with a stone axe to build a cabin. On the whole a cave is probably best.

What a waste of time.

His brain is mush people. Move along, nothing to see here, move along.
As my good friend from Papua New Guinea used to say, "When you're dealing with mushy brains, add some lemon zest and some potatoes and it'll make it firm and tender."...poor fella died from Kuru Disease a few years ago.

It makes me sad when people come here with the pretense of being open-minded and wanting to learn, but then simply cherry-pick what they want to hear to confirm their preconceived notions.

David, thanks for wasting my time. If and when you ever grow up and want to have a real conversation about the world, let me know.
