Cont: The Biden Presidency (3)

Case in point:
I would hope that the GOP would not accept foolish solutions like price caps.

Interest rate hikes are out of Biden's hands (the Fed) and are coming without any legislation required.
Mm. Trump pretty openly "advised" the Fed during his term. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't some kind of collab between the two.

The premise is that this is something that needs to be done, and that the president isn't even trying to do it. In fact he's ignoring one of the most significant levers of power available to his office.

And apparently your answer to that is that he must be doing secret things we're not hearing about, that are totally having a positive effect but he's just not going to tell us what he's doing or how well it's working for some reason.
You haven't heard about interest rates going up?

Yeah? As the correct saying is "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18), I'm not sure how your argument is supposed to work.
I was not quoting Proverbs. I was quoting another poster, bruto, from this very thread.

The way it is supposed to work might best be illustrated by an interwebz meme:

End of may poll

42% Biden 39%Trump
19% undecided.
Interesting... not long ago Biden was below Trump. (3% isn't enough to win with the system rigged in favor of the party with more rural appeal and less urban appeal, but it's closer than negative.) Biden hasn't gotten any better and Trump hasn't gotten any worse. Could the hearing about his coup attempt actually be having an effect? That doesn't usually do better than about #4 on people's lists of what they care about politically. Just imagine what a party that would touch the first three or so could accomplish!

Biden sharing what he wants to happen only lays down a recipe for what to oppose happening.
And this is bad because...

Without that, it's possible the GOP may do the right thing by mistake.
Not while they're deliberately following the "when your opponent is self-destructing, do nothing but watch" strategy.

Fact is the President in office takes the blames for economic woes whether it is his fault or not. It has been that way forever. and I don't see it changing.
Not sure there is much that can be done about inflation in the short term. Price Controls don't really work well, which is why nobody in the Biden Administration is talking about them.

Wrong kind of fall—meme fails.

I think most people will "get it".

What are they supposed to get? Biden's old and falls more easily than a young person? So am I and I've also fallen a couple of times. Doesn't say anything about a person's brain.

Where is the pride supposed to fit in? :boggled:

The difference here is that I was thinking along the lines of Biden being too proud an old cyclist to give up toe clips.

I don't know about that. You can see his foot get stuck in the toe clip when he falls off the bike. You don't need a toe clip because you are old do you? Pretty sure it's a matter of preference for the most experienced riders.

All it takes is a trigger like a stuck toe and you can't stop the fall. In my case I've stepped on the edge of a stepping stone, my ankle gave and I fell. And I have tripped on a couple of curbs. If I was younger I could have probably stopped the fall and turned it into a stumble. But my age means once you are on your way down, it's going to be a fall.

And what about tripping on the plane stairs? Being in a hurry, sure. Being too proud to what? Ask for assistance on every stairway?

I'm sorry but it is a stupid meme no matter how you try to parse it.

When one turns 65 and goes onto Medicare, there is a Medicare Wellness protocol that family doctors may follow. It consists of a test for mental decline, much like the one Trump was so proud of passing.

There’s also a questionnaire, with questions about elderly abuse and the like. One is “Have you had any falls in the last year?” I’m about to turn 73, and I still bicycle and ride motorcycles and I’m generally pretty fit for my age. But my answer to the “fall” question is often non-zero - misstepping coming off a ladder, tripping on a rock in the garden, slipping in the snow, that sort of thing. I have zero doubt that my strength, balance and coordination are not once they once were. And no doubt will continue a gradual decline over the years I have left.

I agree 100% that pride has nothing to do with any of this.

Biden calls for a 3-month federal gas tax pause, or "holiday." (Is it a faint echo of FDR's bank holiday? Nah, nobody but the GOP remembers that.)*

Looks like a regular meat-n-potatoes politician's ploy. Should mollify at least some of the whiners. I wonder what the begrudgers will find wrong with it?

* Like the Bourbons, they've learned nothing and forgotten nothing.

Start complaining about the deficit, duh!

They will probably say stuff like, "Oh, this is just a Band-Aid solution designed to slow the bleeding until election day. The fact is that lowering $4.79 dollar-a-gallon gas to $4.61 isn't going to help as prices will continue to rise and the tax holiday won't change the minds of voters this November."

Meanwhile, in Indiana the gas tax is set to go up later this summer.

Keep in mind, that's a major red state that is going to have a special legislative session in order to authorize a $200 tax rebate for each person and create anti-abortion legislation.

But hey, let that gas tax go up.
