I'm an atheist and my main reaction to religion is disappointment. We should have moved on by now....
i get angry when reading our most important document, our constitution and it also talks about God.
Heresy!The csh man page?
I'm an aroused atheist. I find religion naughty.
You're a naughty religion, aren't you? You want to spank me? You want me to punish for eternity? Yeah, I bet you do. You naughty religion. Make unsupported assertions about the existence and nature of god. Yeah. just like that. Make a first cause argument. ohh. you are naughty. Now tell me how cultural practices and traditions are, in fact, divinely inspired and not a merely a collection of behaviors evolved to aide group cohesion and sense of belonging. Yes! Punish me, I've been a bad boy.
Your post would have been a poll option I'd have chosen. There wasn't an option for me. I am interested in people, and one of more telling aspects of a person is what religion they follow, and how much of it they hold to be true (such as the "cafeteria Christians". Some religious concepts I find puzzling, some amusing, some inspirational (as in, if only people would act that way), and some outright horrific.
Correction, I'm an agnostic and I'm PISSED!!!!
I can't believe I got the sugar-free Juice again!
I didn't vote because I wouldn't consider myself an 'angry' atheist. Bitter is probably a better word.
I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and it had a detrimental impact on my life from ruining my chances at obtaining a higher education to tearing apart my family. Extracting myself from that faith left mental scars on me that I will carry for a lifetime.
I get angry about some things related to religion, but mostly I find religion to be just another absurdity to laugh at, along with pretty much everything else.
Why did it ruin your chances at higher education?
Because JW's perpetually believe that the end is right around the corner. They've been believing this for as long as they've been around. As a result they actually discourage their members from wasting time and money on a higher education when there's so much preaching to be done. I of course bought the whole line having been indoctrinated from birth. My parents were somewhat moderate and gave their blessing for me to attend a technical school but not university. Even there though, I finally came into contact with people who would shake my belief system and start my 15 year transition to atheism. I feel like I'm an intelligent person whose potential was partially squandered by that religion.
Even owning a computer was frowned upon for a time. Their 'Awake' magazine had an article about how computers were a waste of time and really couldn't do anything that couldn't be done with a pencil and paper. Its ironic now that they release all of their publications on CD-Rom.
