The 51st State of Hudson

I propose the secession of New York City, Long Island, and the neighboring Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam County..from the State of New York and creating the new State of Hudson.

Year after year, we hear about how New York City and surrounding areas never get their fair share from Albany. And frankly, our income taxes fund the upstate and western counties..while we never get enough in educational and other funding.

Basically, NYC, LI, Westchester, and Rockland fund the rest of the state..which is economically falling apart. NO new jobs have been created in New York State, other than in NYC.

How much longer should we be the crutch for the state? We ALL know that the rest of the state hates us anyway. So I say we keep our tax dollars where they belong, and say adiós muchachos to the State of New York...and buenos dias to the new State of Hudson.

I suppose next you'll want to move Washington, D. C. out of the state of Washington.

Washington D.C. is not in Washington State.

Why does New York City have to be in New York State?
 
Shouldn't they also accede parts of New Jersey ? One big metropolitan area.
 
Mmm. Seems there's far too many basic infrastructure needs for which New York City is entirely dependent upon the upstate region. Their power comes from upstate, as well as their water. If New York lost NYC tax revenue, they'd just jack up the utility rates to compensate, not to mention Thruway tolls.

NYC owns the land where our water comes from. But yes, our electricity is from upstate.
 
So what would the flag look like with 51 states? Stay the same or make a new pattern with 51 stars?

This is a good point. As a resident of western New York, I can say that a lot of locals bitch about NYC, but many more quietly accept that it's the state money maker. Buffalo and Erie county are pretty well and completely screwed up, and really only have themselves to blame.

However, the bellaching coming out of NYC is pretty sad as well. Do they really expect upstate parkland to be huge money making projects (even though they do really make money)? Grape and dairy is still profitable as well. The state has problems, sure, but NYC cutting itself off isn't going to do it or the state any real good.
 
So is the rest of the NY ripping off NYC + nearby rich counties, or are they just participating in ripping of the top 10-20% of those areas with the bottom 80% of those areas? ;)
