so the latest Facebook meme has the United Nations policing polling places in the United States. the imagery is shocking! UN in troops complete with body armor milling about in order to kill the first thing they might construe as a voter fraud.

naturally when you go to look at the actual story and the actual sources, you quickly realize this is been going on for 10 years, and these UN 'troops' are actually bespeckled nerds with clipboards.

I can't wait till this retardation of my country gets fixed. I fear it never will.
 
If TPTB already made the mistake of releasing the the election results during the people's court then why would they need the UN?

Once again the most diabolical rulers of the earth are also complete idiots.

Because that is or should be an important part of US foreign policy? Is the US government currently much invested in overseeing elections in other countries?

Is this not something that could easily be left to, say, the UN and assorted NGOs?

Are there any nations out there conducting corrupt or incompetent elections, whose electoral officials would be swayed, or whose outcomes would be improved, by "the UN certified our elections, now let us certify yours"?

I mean, if the UN wants to observe US elections, fine, whatever. But what's the point?
 
If you listen to some Republicans, the US should be doing far more than overseeing elections in other countries---we should be controlling their governments.

Let's put up billboards in neighborhoods populated by stupid white people. They will "remind" voters that they need their UN Voter ID Cards in order to vote, and that failure to carry them is a crime punishable by up to one year in re-education centers.

They'll be so busy stocking their basements full of ammunition, bottled water, and Cheese Whiz that they won't turn out to vote.

Of course, this could result in some deaths as the heavily armed vigilantees shoot exit pollers mistaken for UN representatives. We had better include on the billboards that the elections have been moved to December by UN mandate.

I think it depends entirely on what is meant. If they're just observing and issuing an assessment, that's fine by me.

Policing or overseeing is a different matter entirely. That authority is reserved to the states, so even with a federal invitation, I doubt it would be legal.

ETA: OTOH, in one of the discussions over various proposed photo ID laws, a supporter argued that other countries do it. My counter is that other countries also use the finger-ink method, so should we do that?

I just can't take seriously any poster that abuses commas like the one in the picture. Call me elitist, but I just can't believe someone with a fourth grade education has a better grasp of contemporary politics than I.

Is there a shortage of American activists groups whose voices can be heard in the capital? Is the US government at all inclined to consider seriously complaints from the UN?

I mean, if Congress isn't paying much attention to the SPLC and the ACLU, what makes you think they'll care even a little bit about UN observer reports?

Actually, the Spotted UN Observer was selected for this mission because they are already adapted to the North American climate. Other regions are more likely to see the Red-Tailed UN Observer, or the Banded UN Observer. In some remote regions, the extremely rare Useful UN Observer has been reported, but these reports have yet to be confirmed.
