Tricky
Briefly immortal
Well it appears that Texas has it's very own Tea Party Senator, Ted Cruz. True, the election is in November, but this is Texas. The Republican always wins. And the Tea Party, to their credit, did a great job of turning out the vote. I stood in line for over an hour just for a run-off election. Whatever you say about the Tea Party, you got to admit they are persuading citizens to do their civic duty.
But what does this really mean? The two candidates, Cruz and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, were so similar on issues, they could have popped out of the womb in succession. Nevertheless, the campaign was massively funded and as deep in mud as a wallow for pig/giraffe hybrids. The sad thing (to me) was that they were both badmouthing each other as much as they could with stuff that made me want to vote against the badmouther.
"He wants to educate immigrants."
"Well he wants to keep Planned Parenthood open."
"Well HE wants to teach evolution in schools."
"Well HE once said something non-insulting about Obama."
"Well HE wants to raise teacher's pay."
"Well I hate gays much more than he does."
"That's a LIE. I hate gays more than Hitler!"
It was like a contest to see who could be the most miserable, greedy, hateful bastard.
As for the results, it actually does make some difference. Though their policies were practically identical, Cruz, being tied to the teabag string, is more likely to be obstructionist and intransigent in Congress, leading to further gridlock. The state would have been a little better with Dewhurst, who as Lt. Governor, the most powerful elected position in Texas, has experience working across the aisle. Both candidates lined up powerful supporters, with the crazies (Palin, Santorum, Arpaio) lining up behind Cruz and the idiots (Perry, Huckabee and most of the Washington crowd) endorsing Dewhurst.
Now I'm really worried about Texas. I'm beginning to think that we could actually do worse than Rick Perry for governor. I'm not sure how, but recent trends seem to indicate a further descent into abject stupidity. How bad could it get? Well, Texas is one of the few states where Sarah Palin could easily get elected.
