Texas bans abortion.

And you are dangerously paranoid. While I despise Trump and his cronies I do not believe every Republican in Congress is an evil closeted jackbooted fascist. I've talked before about extremists who see things in only black and white... either all good or all bad... and you are a good example that this trait doesn't only exist on the extreme right.

#notAllRepublicans

Your argument is invalid, as related to my stance. I don't have any problem with pre-conception birth control. In fact, I encourage it. I have a problem with abortion as a means of birth control.

It might not be your stance, but you are enabling and supporting those who do have that stance. Your position is the same as a person supporting the take over of Fascism in Italy, not because they want Fascism, but because they like that Mussolini can get the trains to run on time.

This is clearly what is missing in American politics: the need to appeal to Republicans' better nature.

My favorite part of this is the International Experts On American Culture And Law.

Is this you saying, "Stay in your lane!"

I am curious. What do you want from this? You say, "It's a bad law" then spend most of the time LOLing about it.

Maybe you don't really care about it that much, but you care about criticism of the law. That's funny, isn't it.

Careful, there. Someone might come along and mention how some people squawk about "her body, her choice", while they are also pushing for mandatory vaccines. "Choice" and "Rights" are murky moral areas, it would seem.

An abortion is a personal act that affects just the pregnant woman. (Not counting as 'affecting' the busybodies poking their nose into her private medical affairs.) Her removing a zygote from her uterus does me no harm whatsoever.

A transmissable virus, on the other hand, hops from person to person. Your infection can kill me.

For just a moment, imagine that instead of a 'superflu' running rampant, it were Ebola.

The folk who currently say that Covid induces no fear because of Heaven awaiting would damn well be screeching in terror if this bug were instead Ebola. With Covid they have the benefit of something in the 1:1000 chance of dying, hence their 'courage'. Make it nearer to a 9:10 chance of dying, and their tune would be wholly different.

A school shooter also does me, "no harm whatsoever".

Apologies if this idea has already been floated, but my wife’s coworker has suggested that some blue state needs to pass a law that anyone involved in a gun death, from the manufacturer to the gun salesman to the shooter’s buddy who once gave him a ride, can be sued for the death.
It's a nice thought.

Watch the SCOTUS jump on that & rule it unconstitutional, however!

Listening to Republicans, they very much claim that Liberals have already nuked the country, and all they can do it strike back and rebuild from the ashes.
Knowing Republicans, they think that there is nothing Democrats will actually do that would stop their powergrab.
Look at it from their perspective: in free, fair and representative elections, they simply don't have the votes to keep their power (they know enough about their demographics to have realized this a long time ago). What are they supposed to do, moderate their platform  ?

The libs?....the libs?....THE LIBS?

Exactly when did the libs in America become so powerful as to manage this. Oh yeah, is this the George Will argument that it is because of the Democrats that the conservatives are stupid?

Why did you force me to fascist so much?

Lordy, but your are bad at this.

The shooter does harm some other sentient being, which is his intent.

The woman harms nothing outside her own body. And a nonviable zygote is very much a part of her body, utterly dependent on her. In the same way a tumor is.

See the difference?

How can this law be tested? Sabotaging Texas's shabby informer line is easy enough, but that doesn't solve the problem of the statute.

This isn't any Scopes Monkey Case. This involves real patients and doctors. The best, most American way to deal with an unjust law is to break it and then take the consequences. But this law? Who will defy it with her flesh and blood?

And yet, t's sure to happen. It won't happen to a rich woman.

It's as though "non-viable" is a term to sooth the itching ears of liberals. Which it is.

Tell me how "soothing" a stack of aborted second and third trimester babies is?

Ugly truth, no doubt. And hence, heavy-handed legislation like they have passed in Texas.

ETA: Comparing babies to tumors? Cool.

A pile of cells is not a human being, no matter how much you pout.

2nd trimester abortions are rare, 3rd trimester even rarer and done only because something has gone very, very wrong. People don't carry to the 3rd trimester just to have an abortion for funsies. These are people who probably already bought a crib. And now the fundies want to make their lives even more miserable.

Was it in a Jack Chick comic?
I used to post Jack Chick tracts here for comic relief. My views on abortion are based on non religious reasoning. I still say it is immoral to terminate a normal pregnancy after the woman has had consenting unprotected sex. What did she expect?

Despite my belief in the lack of morality associated with abortion I also support a woman's right to control her own body despite the fact that I disagree with her doing that.

Bottom line if you deliberately have sex and don't use protection then the woman should carry the infant to full term and then have it adopted.

If you disagree with me then I can't stop you from doing what I personally think is wrong nor should I have the power to do so.

I'm late to the thread, dunno if this has been brought up yet.

Exactly how will a legal challenge to this law be brought when there is no government official to sue because it's the vigilantes who enforce the law?

I've heard a lot in the past two days about how an injunction to stop the law before it went into effect would and did fail, but very little about what happens now.

Wait, they come in stacks? Here I am buying them one at a time from this shady pantsuited woman in a dark alley, like a chump!

Are the stacks at Costco, or Sam's?

Reasonable enough. But the real question is, would you defend the passing of a law that would prevent a woman from exercising her right to exercise the right? I know that you have quite clearly answered this question in your post, but this is for someone else's benefit.

No, it’s not. Not yet.

Most of the noise on this issue comes from the extremes, such that it’s hard to take a middle ground without being attacked by one or both of the extremes.

That “pile of cells” contains a unique combination of human DNA from its parents, one that has never been seen before in the history of the universe nor will ever be seen again. It has the potential to become a human being simply by letting nature take its course. A humanist, finding human life and potential a positive, would likely see it as a negative to snuff out that unique potential human being without very strong justification.

That said, I find it abhorrent that a woman could be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term against her will. Which is why I find myself in a conflicted middle ground, hating the idea and reality of abortion while at the same time hating the idea of draconian restrictions to a woman’s right to have one on her own terms. As the extreme positions battle it out and get the majority of air time, I wonder how many, like myself, just long for some compromise solution.

Do you also oppose birth control? That too prevents the miraculous combination of potential yadda and yadda.

[ETA] Actually, by that logic, World of Warcraft is one of the greatest moral criminals the world has ever seen. Just imagine what kind of potential human beings we'd have if those sweaty nerds went outside and porked!

There's one already. Birth. That we're now looking for a "compromise" in the region where you couldn't possibly know you're pregnant is due to one side in particular calling every compromise an extreme position and demanding further compromise.
