This deserves a thread of its own, not just to be lumped in with "Today's Mass Shooting".

The governor of Texas said just 2 weeks ago (at the NRA conference):

Gov Abbott 2 weeks ago at NRA Nat’l convention:”The problem is not guns. It’s hearts without God.”

Now he is saying:

"we need to do more than pray for the victims"

More than twice as many American students have died this year as American soldiers.

The Washington Post has just reported that more Americans have been killed at schools this year than have been killed while serving in the military.

The newspaper compiled Department of Defense statistics and their own record of murders in US schools to find that nearly twice as many people were killed in schools than in the military.

No, but people, including me, have suggested making it an offense to allow your weapons to fall into the hands of minors, and other people who shouldn't have them. If you don't store them safely, it's your fault.

Secure storage laws are one of the changes that often gets cited as one where gun owners tend to agree, and even the NRA has said they would support...before of course opposing them completely.

Storing them safely and securely may not prevent a mass shooting after a theft or taking them by force (armed robber forces you to open the gun safe).

The only true cessation to mass shootings will require taking away all guns from everyone.

Sounds like another case where a "caring" father gave the guns to the shooter.

But the person who conforms with the safe storage laws could end up going insane and then do a mass shooting. Nobody can have a gun because anybody can turn mass killer.

BTW can somebody change the title for the thread? Slightly misleading, since anybody seeing it would assume it's means the shootings took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is not the case.

100% agree and I would also suggest severe punishment for straw purchases and loaning of firearms as well.

Somebody does something illegal with a firearm in your personal control? You go to jail. Period.

Is there much point in having these discussions?

There will be outrage for a week or two. Maybe three or four.

People will say something should be done.

Politicians will say that they have to do things.

They'll keep saying that until the story drops out of the news. Then they will quietly drop it. Nothing, absolutely nothing, will change.

And in a few days, few weeks, or few months, it will happen again. And again. And again. And again. A hundred years from now, it will still be happening.

Would 50 years to Life imprisonment work to stop the mass shootings? Loan a gun and do life behind bars, even if nobody gets shot?

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggested "There are too many entrances and too many exits to properly guard. Maybe we need to look at limiting the entrance and exits into our schools,"

There you have it folks, it isn't guns that kill people it's doors.

This is why we need an assault weapons ban RIGHT NOW!

I don't think you can assume that. Aberrant social behaviors do sometimes just stop happening. It's ghoulish It may seem defeatist to say that, but sometimes trends come and go, often with no obvious explanation. That doesn't mean we shouldn't learn what lessons we can, and act.

Teen suicidal ideation and suicide attempts doubled from 2008 to 2015, according to this Newsweek article . Study authors believe it has something to do with social media. Time reported in 2017 that the suicide rate of teenage girls hit a 40-year high in 2015. (Boys are still nearly 3 times as likely to kill themselves as girls). The article mentions substance abuse, mental health stigma and lingering economic stress. IOW, they don't know.

I hope I'm not getting too off-topic, but I'm just saying, sometimes trends spike or fall without a handy explanation.

Exactly right. Gun culture has won. it is a religion. America is happy to sacrifice a few dozen children a year in order to keep their guns.

Here's a rather weird quote from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott: The shooter "gave himself up" because "he didn't have the courage to commit the suicide". (per the BBC)

Maybe the kid actually said that, I don't know. Taunting him seems ... inappropriate? I wonder if they'll forget to take away his belt and shoelaces ...

I'm glad he's not dead. Maybe we can learn something about how young people wind up in that state.

Franklin Graham President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said today

"The school shooting this morning in Santa Fe, TX, has left 10 dead & our nation in mourning. Join me in lifting up in prayer the students, faculty, & staff of Santa Fe High School, & most importantly the families of those whose lives were tragically taken."

After the mass shooting at Sandy Hook School, he opposed background checks for gun buyers because God does them.

Nobody has even suggested banning shotguns and revolvers, though.

Well, apart from the few who want a ban on all guns.

Hunters can do without automatic and pump-action shotguns. Very few people should have revolvers.

I've suggested banning any gun that could shoot "lots of bullets, very fast". I know that shotguns don't actually fire bullets, but you can guess that "lots of deadly projectiles, very fast" is close enough for my tastes.

I haven't yet seen exactly what guns this kid used, so I don't know if they fall into the category of weapons I would want to ban.
