Teenage bullies turned old religious fanatics

Generally, in my experience, good people are good whatever their faith or lack of it and bad people are bad whatever their faith or lack of it.

I would tend to agree. I think that people who abuse and belittle others will find some outlet for it, be it as a religious zealot, a cruel prison guard, or as a store manager who berates his employees. I think we have all run into bullies in multiple positions throughout life, because people like this will try to turn whatever system they are in into a conduit for their bad behavior.

I think the danger with religious fundamentalism lies in the fact that the system itself is actually geared to encourage and heighten this behavior by making it not only acceptable, but morally "correct."

I must be missing them; what are all these horrible assumptions being made here?

Or the best we're going to get are a handful of seagull posts about how awful ISKEP and some of its members are?

If they had grown up Muslim instead of Christian, they would be in the Taliban.

Hmm, this suggests that by encouraging holy wars, natural selection could reduce the overall instances of both bullying and religious fundamentalism. Probably authoritarianism of all kinds.

If only we could lock them all on an island and let them kill each other and leave us alone.

Gladiatorial combat. Televised. Imagine if people could resolve disagreements in doctrine by literally fighting someone who disagrees with him.

I'm sure something would go wrong along the way, but it sure seems like a good idea at times.

However, we need to tightly regulate this sort of thing. Let's restrict the weapons choice. Small puncture wounds with slow acting poison. Something inevitably fatal, but with no ill effects for 30 minutes. That should do it.

Way back in the late 50's and middle sixties I was in school. Like all schools the schools I went to had bullies.

There is a luncheon held once a month by former students of my school and the bullies that are still living are without exception fundamentalist Christians. This is not a coincidence.

Looking up one of the scariest punks and bully I have ever known is now a total Jesus freak. I mean this guy was a murderer wannabe.

Thoughts?

Well, seems they have improved, then. From harmful PITA to harmless PITA.
