A San Diego Catholic school teacher has lost her job and her children no longer allowed to attend the school after informing the schools principal of domestic abuse issues with her ex-husband and warning to be on the lookout for him.

He showed up in the parking lot of the school the following day and the school went on lockdown before he was arrested on multiple felony charges.

The schools official stance is that Charlesworth's ex-husband makes her too much of a liability for the school where she has taught for 14 years.

I have no opinion on the story yet. I just want to thank you for writing an OP that is consistent with the sensational headline, and which presents a useful summary of the story, including the acting party's justification for their act. This OP is something that I think deserves public appreciation, so here it is. Thanks!

So when Anonymous sends death threats to the principal, she will of course resign in order to protect the children from potential collateral damage?

Challenge accepted . . . doh!

That was supposed to be anonymous . . .

Bada dat ding.

It is a religious institution where blaming the victim is almost standard practice.
this has nothing to do with blaming the victim, and everything to do with parental fears post-Sandy Hook.

I agree with the compliment to the OP. I fully expected to click on this and get sensationalism. To me the school didn't have much of a choice. And realistically, they may have saved her life. She's going to be forced to get out of dodge and go elsewhere and sadly that is the only thing that will sometimes save a woman's life in this type of situation.

It's also cool that the story went to national because now this scumbag creep will have his picture plastered everywhere and it might deter him.

Darn Skippy I would. The safety of innocent children would be more important than a replaceable job.

Yeah, that'll teach her to call the cops! Next job, when he locates her and threatens her again, she'll keep silent so that she isn't fired from Our Lady of the Sweat Glands in Anytown, Ohio. And then he'll show up and beat her to death with a tire iron. But, hey, that's cool. At least the kids at the first school weren't threatened or traumatized (by a guy who's being held on multiple felony counts and will likely do serious time).

This poor woman is being treated as a criminal and it's outrageous that the school has sacked her. This would certainly not happen in Australia.

Do you have kids? What do you expect the school to do? Sometimes the liberal leaning on this site is so incredibly over the top that I can really after a while understand why Sarah Palin is appealing to the other side.

Do you have kids? She should have quit and took her kids out of the school. Any decent person would not put all those other children at risk because your husband is a nut job.

I do feel for the woman but jeez what's to stop him from trying to get revenge on her by going in and shooting up a school?

Do you have kids?

No. That's a gerbil in my avatar.

What do you expect the school to do?
It's not what I expect the school to do, it's what I expect them not to do. I expect them not to cower under the desks behind locked doors and to do everything possible to help the police to apprehend the guy if he's at large.

Ignored, since it's a senseless comment.

Do you have kids?
I raised a daughter in NYC - in Alphabet City during the rough years. If every time there was a bad guy on the loose in the neighborhood we went into lock-down mode, she'd have never left home from the ages of four to twenty!
I'm now raising a gorgeous son in a country where a known percentage of the tourists are here for the kiddie sex.

She should have quit and took her kids out of the school. Any decent person would not put all those other children at risk because your husband is a nut job.
Heading down a slippery slope with this, as you did in your first post. Any decent person? That means every battered wife or battered husband? Everyone who ever pissed off the town bully?

I do feel for the woman but jeez what's to stop him from trying to get revenge on her by going in and shooting up a school?
Police. School security. Neighborhood watch. The answer is not to fire the victim and then feel better because you might have actually inadvertently done her a favor. Is it a big favor to lose a decade-long job. What school district near her and her family and friends is going to hire her, knowing the madman is going to come terrorize their school? What school district halfway across the country is going to? I can see the PTA meeting in a town a thousand miles away. "So we have this candidate who was removed from her last job because her husband's a lunatic who threatened her on school property or we can hire the kid out of Okmulgee Teacher's College. Let's put it to a voice vote."

Sorry but it's a private school not a public school. If it was a public school she'd probably be moved to an internal position outside of a school.

The whole post above is ridiculous. She called the school and warned them he might show up even if she and her kids weren't there. AND HE DID.

The only reason they had to fire her is that she didn't have the decency to quit.

Also I'm going to point out yet again another example on this site where it is obvious the poster didn't READ the article before commenting on it.

And no it doesn't mean everyone it means any decent person in this position would not put innocent children at risk because of her.

Public/Private. It doesn't matter. "District" vs. "Diocese". Her employment record still travels with her.

The whole post above is ridiculous.
Hand-waving is easier than addressing it, I guess.

She called the school and warned them he might show up even if she and her kids weren't there. AND HE DID.
Sounds like a win/win. She responsibly called. She responsibly kept her and her kids away from school. They were on the lookout and spotted him. He was arrested. Whew! That's over. Put the bastage in jail and everyone back to work!

The only reason they had to fire her is that she didn't have the decency to quit.

Victim-blaming.

Your ETA:

It's traditional that when you edit a post, you note it as an ETA.

I read the thread and the article. It seems pretty clear cut. We're not discussing a dispute on the contents therein, are we? We are discussing whether we agree with the school's action. I don't. You do. Don't be trolling those passive-aggressive "reading comprehension" or "cognitive dissonance" red herrings with me.

I second this sentiment. My thanks as well!

Sorry about forgetting the ETA. I assumed that you could read at the bottom that it had been edited.

You exaggerated the statement to situations with "everyone" rather than what I actually said. And I do stand by my opinion that you did not read the actual article before commenting. You simply argued against me.

And I will also continue to point out when it is obvious to me that people are not reading that actual articles. I will also point out when people respond by generalizing a specific statement which you can clearly see in reading your comment is EXACTLY what you did.

I think if she had the wherewithall to call the school and tell them he might show up there, this indicates that she knew he was a threat to others. And the fact that she didn't quit after he did this is a completely stupid and selfish act IMO.
