Merged Teabagger Candidate Rich Iott is into Nazi Cosplay

Wiking division was probably the least nazi of all of the SS divisions, as it consisted mostly of Scandinavians who joined to fight communism.

Of course, they were still nazi and they did commit atrocities. As I Norwegian I had hoped to never hear of them again.

Item #340,327 of things I thought we all agreed upon before Teabagger politics took root.

"Dressing up and glorifying Nazis isn't right and will likely ruin your chances at being elected in America".

Following last week's revelations that fire departments only put out fires for those who pay, and a Republican nominee for Senate is not, in fact, a witch, it's been a strange week.

I recreat medieval history, yet I do not agree with or endorse the feudal system.

If you understand how the historical recreation hobby works, then you know this is probably a non-issue.

It's up to each voter to decide whether it's an issue or not.

It's up to democrats to make sure each voters sees pictures of Iott in his Nazi regalia. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Do you have a website that says the Spanish Inquisition was only fighting for a "better tomorrow"?

I agree 100% friend! ...but with that right comes the obligation to make informed rational decisions, not just knee-jerk emotional ones.

Only if it has a context to it. This picture does not convey the context of what it represents. This picture requires quite a few words to accurately explain it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting that anyone vote for Mr. Iott. I am sure that I will not. I am only saying that we should not vote for him or not based on real substantive issues, not meaningless things like participating in the WWII reenactment hobby.

Yes, it's part of the OP.

Germany headed a stong movement in Europe to actively campaign (politically and through warfare) against the ideals of Bolshevist Communism. This culminated in 1941, when the German armed forces were pitted against the very home of Bolshevism, Soviet Russia. Nazi Germany had no problem in recruiting the multitudes of volunteers willing to lay down their lives to ensure a "New and Free Europe", free of the threat of Communism. National Socialism was seen by many in Holland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and other eastern European and Balkan countries as the protector of personal freedom and their very way of life, despite the true underlying totalitarian (and quite twisted, in most cases) nature of the movement. Regardless, thousands upon thousands of valiant men died defending their respective countries in the name of a better tomorrow. We salute these idealists; no matter how unsavory the Nazi government was, the front-line soldiers of the Waffen-SS (in particular the foreign volunteers) gave their lives for their loved ones and a basic desire to be free.

Now, isn't it true that these men committed atrocities against Jews?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffen-SS

At the other end of Europe, the Waffen-SS was dealing with the Warsaw Uprising. Between August and October 1944, the Dirlewanger Brigade (recruited from criminals and the mentally ill) and the Waffen-Sturm-Brigade RONA as well as a number of smaller units were sent to Warsaw to put down the uprising. During the battle, the Dirlewanger behaved atrociously, raping, looting and killing citizens of Warsaw regardless of whether they belonged to the Polish resistance or not; Oskar Dirlewanger himself encouraged their excesses. The unit's behavior was reportedly so bestial and indiscriminate that Himmler was forced to detail an attached battalion of SS military police for the sole purpose of ensuring the Dirlewanger convicts did not turn their aggressions against their own leaders or nearby German units.[93] At the same time they were encouraged by Himmler to terrorize freely, take no prisoners, and generally indulge their perverse tendencies. Favoured tactics of the Dirlewanger men during the siege reportedly included the ubiquitous gang rape of female Poles, both women and children; playing "bayonet catch" with live babies; and torturing captives to death by hacking off their arms, dousing them with gasoline, and setting them alight to run armless and flaming down the street.[94][95] The Dirlewanger brigade committed almost non-stop atrocities during this period, in particular the four-day Wola massacre.

Better tomorrow! Freedom!!!

LOL! I don't like nazis at all. quit trying to make this about me. :)

(Please give me the origin of this "better tomorrow" quote. thanks)

The political history of germany is obviously a very sensitive subject, so I realize that the sheer weight of what has gone before will prohibit people from looking at this objectivly, and I don't really blame someone for that if they have a big emotional stake in the matter.

This is a fact though: Participation in a historical recreation hobby does not necessarily mean a person endorses a particular political view.

I have a large circle of friends that recreate various historical conlficts from medieval to the vietnam war. I personally know many WWII renactors that are primarily participate as germans. (even as SS troops) I say "primarily" because there is a large amount of crossover. Most guys own uniforms for more than one nation. None of my friends are nazis! The are all history nerds.

At these battles, which are usually done as a pubic show, you have to have two sides to make it work. If everyone was an american, it would be a pretty boring affair. You have to have bad guys too. It is quite common for sides to be unevenly represented however. That is not much better. So you will see the larger side lend some guys to the outnumbered arny, at which point those guys switch uniforms and weapons and cheerfully blast away at their former comrades in arms. It's a fun game and a way to indulge your historical curiosity beyond reading books about the subject. It is not a political rally or expression of political views.

Why would someone choose to join an SS recreation group? Well first, they are interested in WWII military history. beyond that, it might be the only group in their area, or it might be they just like the uniforms better. (face it, the germans have awsome uniforms & equipment) It could even be that they had a childish spat with a recreator in the local American group and decided to go play elsewere. One of my friends who happens to be a very nice lady joined a russian unit so that she could dress as a female in combat. She did not want to dress like a man. The russians had female combat troops, so she went russian. Is she a communist? Well, she owns and operates here own business, so no. She is a red-blooded freedom-loving all-American girl that dress in a russian uniform and shoots blanks at her friends on the weekends because it is unbelivably fun.

People get into this hobby because it is fun and the have a love of military history, not because they have a need to express their political views. Those people join militias, or cults or the PTA. :D

Seriouly though, While there may be the some individuals that join up because they think that the nazis, the confedaracy, the inquisiton or the whiz kids had the right idea, that is far from the norm.

Assuming that a person belongs to an SS recreation group is just that, it is an assumption. That's not good skepticism. I don't know what sort of recreator Mr. Iott is, but labeling him as nazi sympathizer because he belongs to an SS recreation unit is wrong. He might in fact be a nazi sympathizer, but one would need to find another way of proving it.

I just did. Did you miss it? It's the Wikings own website. I included the whole paragraph. Is there something more you need?

Yes, it's part of the OP.

Ok Thanks for the help.

This quote is clearly being taken out of context. Here is the whole paragraph:
"European Volunteers,
Join to Fight Bolshevism!" Germany headed a stong movement in Europe to actively campaign (politically and through warfare) against the ideals of Bolshevist Communism. This is speaking of the historical situation in WWII and referencing some of the contemporary propaganda used to recruit non-german nationials into the SS. The parts I have bolded above clearly indicate that the unit's website diapproves of the nazi party and it's political ideas. They are not praising the nazis as bringers of a better tommorrow, They are clearly and unmistakably bemoaning the loss of life in the name of such a false hope.

Like I said, Iott's participation with this historical reenactment group needs to be put into context before deciding he is a nazi. The "better tommorrow" quote has been mined out of site to make political hay against him.

These guys are nerds, not nazis.

Nope, thanks. I wrote that before I saw your link. My last post addresses the quote.

Any thoughts on what I have said about reenactment groups?

I think people are missing the full impact of what Iott was doing. This wasn't some random picture from a Halloween party pulled from a Facebook page, or a recreation of the Battle of Normandy. This guy was part of a group that glorified the exploits of the S.S. by putting on their uniforms and pretending to be them.

That is a natural assumption, but it is not accurate. I refer you to my explanation of how these groups work in post #35 above. Also my comments on their opinion of the nazi part in post #38. Food for thought, I hope.
