TAM5 rumors

For those U.S. people who want to complain about an international destination...

*slap* Get a passport!

I'd love to go abroad, seriously. Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. But I really think an international destination will limit our numbers. Attendance brings more money to JREF and sends that many more smiling skeptics home ready to speak up.

A botanist would be totally underutilized in Vegas. On the other hand, when Evy was asked what type of plant a particularly small and scrubby little bush was, she replied: "A green one. And it grows in the desert!"

This was actually a highlight that I forgot to mention.
That was me! Since I've never been to the Southwest before I wanted to know. I love the sciences and the natural world. Geology is fascinating but I want to know about the other stuff too! I wanted a biologist for the flora and fauna but hey, there did seem to be precious little fauna out here. I think we only found ants. So different than New England! Fascinating!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and recommend Mexico.

I go to mexico 1-2 times per year, and places like Cancun have big, big convention facilities, nice weather in January, low costs, and a small but efficient international airport.

Not to mention beautiful beaches, Eco-parks, snorkelling, scuba, and Oodles of mayan ruins to explores
Ohhh...Mayan ruins. I might even be able to run a tour to Chitzen Itza! Fascinating ruins! Fascinating culture! I'd love to talk about it. Jaguar worship! Jaguar's eating human hearts! How better than you get? :D

Oooo...Oaxaca. Some place where I've always wanted to go. Beautiful pottery and handicrafts. Beautiful scenary. I've been to the Yucatan but Oaxaca is the next place I want to go in Mexico!

someplace warm would mean that I could help on the tour by pointing out cool insects!! I would love to be in south florida and take everyone snorkeling in the mangrove swamps.
(no bugs, but lots of cool marine inverts....and I know nearly all of us....float. :p )

I vote for Vegas

I go there 2-3 times a year for conferences for work purposes, and I always have a good time. There's a lot to do in a small area, and it's a great place for large groups.

I vote Vegas! I think that the Luxor, Monte Carlo (which has a strong magic theme), Caesar's Palace, or the Stratosphere, are all worth looking into for a group this size (which will again grow by next year).

I vote Vegas. Penn & Teller are there... there is a Freethought group (LVFS), a skeptic's group (SOLV), humanist, Socrates Cafe, and probably others. You can fly there from pretty much anywhere in the world.

Also, I live there, so it would be great for me!

We all float down here... (sorry sad Stephen King reference). I would love that. I don't fancy insects so much but I'd love learning about different critters.

scuba suits are very slimming. (otherwise, do you think I would go near one??)

and besides, no one looks that sexy with that snorkel tube in their mouth and goggles on. :p
You do look good getting in and out of the water though.
Any one who floats can snorkel.

Just a quick update.

My unnamed source has a name the rhymes with Hal Bidlack. He mentioned Orlando on Paltalk. Last night he mentioned one of the main reasons for considering Orlando was the hotel costs.

Don’t know if there was anything else mentioned tonight on Paltalk, since I just got back from work and probably won’t be there tonight.

Says who ... ?
I'm sure you've got your heart set on Orlando now, but don't let that influence your judgement.

Orlando. It has the climate, hotels, convention areas, and outside interests to accomodate everyone.
I like Vegas, but let's take a break!

I fully intend to come to TAM5 next year. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to TAM4 due to work commitments.

Coming from the southern hemisphere is a big expense so I really would appreciate it being held somewhere that's easy to get to and has reasonably priced accommodation.
