TAM X - Singles n' Singles

hm ... if I was at TAM (don't I whish?) and saw the forum table, chances are I wouldn't expect it to be a source that would help me to make the most out of tam. I would assume it's there to get me to sign up to the forum.

I know that's not it, or at least not nearly all of it - but I think there ought to be a way to signal to clueless newbies "you can go here and them friendly people will help you to spend your time, socialize, and what not ..."

Huge yellow TAMbassador Buttons?

Huge yellow TAMbassador Buttons?

If this is a joke I am missing it.

I am not sure i have a solution - I just think I wouldn't be inclined to approach that desk if i didn't know what it was about, and that would be a shame.

Maybe have the registration desk (there is such a thing, right?) send people over, or point out what the big yellow buttons are for. Even if there were big yellow buttons I'd have no clue that they mean I can talk to those people and they will tell me about pajama parties, poker tournaments and chocolate dicks...

Yes, any successful TAMbassador program would need to be at least semi-official, so the JREF could include mentions of it in e-mails and the like, so people would know to look out for them.

This made me think that you should have a cardboard dummy of a TAMbassador with the button/t-shirt or whatever, so people would actually know what to look out for.

(And the extremely shy and socially awkward TAMsters could just hang out with the dummy instead of being forced to interact with real people ...)

:D

But maybe a picture of the button, slogan, T-shirt or whatever will suffice ...

Hi! I hope that you will pardon my newness.
I will be attending my first ever TAM by myself and I'm single. I just found out about first time badges at a forum table and I think that's a great idea. Is this table hard to find and will they still be available Thursday afternoon, when I'll be there?
Thanks to all of you very considerate veterans!

I think there's a guy organising an event for TAM newbies. Nobody seems to know where, when or what to do and it didn't sound like much fun.
;)

Well, that's exactly why I earlier suggested a message from the JREF to all attendees, so they would know the forum table was the place to go to find out about social activities.

How much would we really even need the JREF's cooperation to put this idea into action? Other than getting their okay to do it, we could do the bulk of it on our own:

- Put out a call here on the forum for volunteers who don't mind being "information providers" throughout the conference -- people who've attended one or more TAMs, know a lot of the regular attendees, and are active in some of the forum-organized social events. I'd certainly volunteer.

- Create bright, visible TAMbassador buttons that ambassadors can wear on their badges or shirts, saying something like "I'm a TAMbassador -- ask me anything."

- Publicize on the TAM twitter feed, on the forum, at the forum table, on the dry board in the hall. Wondering where the hell you're supposed to do after the day's conferences are over? Overheard something about a game night but can't find anyone who knows details? How come people are walking around wearing Randi beards? Answer: find someone wearing a TAMbassador pin, and they'll help you out.

- Over the course of the weekend, stay current on what social activities have been planned -- or, even easier, just escort people to the forum table when they have a question you can't answer.

The JREF's role:

- Being aware of the program so they can answer questions about it when asked. Yeah, it would also be nice if they would email all attendees prior to the conference, but would it really be necessary? The program would essentially advertise itself once people arrived at the conference.

Hi, guys!

I just got a grant to go to TAM, and I've never been, and I have social anxiety.

I thought this thread might help, but then it didn't, so I skipped to the last page and now it seems like it might.

So I don't read through a bunch of bickering, has anything been decided about getting people together who might otherwise stand around wishing they had social skills?

(ususally when I go by myself to things at hotels, there's the option of flamboyant costumes, so I just let my flamboyant costume speak for me. I don't think I want to go that route this time.) :p

Hi eclipse, congrats on the grant!

Make sure you visit the forum table to say Hi and pick up a First Tammer button. Also make sure you follow the twitter hashtag #TAM2012 because there will be a lot of announcements like "A group is headed to x, meet at the horses ass if you want to come along". Make a resolution to yourself that you will attend at least one of those things each day. Some are pricey, but others are inexpensive like bowling or the Mac King show.

And sign up for a few things. The earlier the better, so you can meet some people you might hang with for the weekend.

That and the beer thing should cover it.

And say "Hi" to Randi when you see him; he likes meeting people, but lots of people are too shy to just go up and say hi. I've dragged more than one person up to introduce them!

Also follow #taminfo. That's the one we've used in the past.

And buy Scrut a beer from me. I intend to get him to buy all my beer this weekend under the premise I'll repay him at TAM, even though I can't make it this year.

I don't have a twitter account or a facebook page. It is hard being a luddite. :(

However, the extracurricular thread looks promising. :)

I wonder if crazylegsmurphy will be attending this year? Maybe he'll be up for a penny slots meetup!!!

(I just read back through the thread. A classic!!!)
