Sylvia Browne: Skeptics, Dark Entities and Other Challenges

Thank you for the invitation! I've been thinking how nice it would be for the family to meet some of ya'll! TAM 7 is next July in Las Vegas, correct?

I agree with JPL ...Robert would be thrilled and flatered for others to take up the fight against SB and others like her. I have read how so many of you consider him a role model so follow his lead and step out there with him. What a great compliment that would will be!

And I can't wait to read your book reviews!

Janie

I have a blog that I used for advertising and commenting on all of Robert's articles when they came out.

I would love to be able to blog about this thread if you all don't mind, especially ExMinister as your original post would be the meat of my article. Would that be okay?

Donna

p.s. I just wrote an entry yesterday with a imaginative evening with Sylvia Browne and her new boyfriend if you'd like to read it but make sure you do so on an empty stomach.

I have a seperate category there for all SB material if you're interested...

It's OK with me - keeping in mind that I was recalling things that I had read an hour or so ago without the book in front of me to quote from. But I stand by the gist of it! (Promise not to quote me on the "derogatorality" typo :o ) I have half a plan to go buy that book to send to Robert as a gift when he's ready to read through it, and to go back through that chapter. Probably I'll wind up back here venting on the rest of it! Like I said, I don't want to spend the money and Robert specifically says NOT to spend money that will wind up in SB's pocket, but maybe if it was to be a gift to him, it could be justified.

I liked your blog on Sylvia's riches. I thought the quote from her newsletter was revealing: "Don’t depend on anyone to take care of your money,” Sylvia advises. “There isn’t a penny that drops that I don’t know where it is.”

Speaking of which, there is an article about SB in the latest Skeptical Inquirer magazine, where the writer says that 3000 people (a sold out crowd) turned out for one of the seminars she attended recently during Sylvia's farewell tour. She compared that to the much smaller attendance (900 people) at the last TAM. And that was just ONE leg of Sylvia's tour. So it would appear that even if business is dwindling when it comes to the readings, there is still plenty to keep Sylvia going. :(

As for legal issues related to Robert's site and those that are similar: They apparently also vary from state to state. One rule of thumb is to be careful to state that what you are presenting is an "opinion," and I was told that if you present your argument in the form of a question, you are usually safe. But the real key is to stick to the facts and have the documentation to support them - fortunately, they speak for themselves!

I would only mention this thread and lead people here to read it, making sure to make it obvious what is my opinion and what I read here.

Robert and I discussed me opening the blog in order to drum up more attention whenever he put up a new article back in January, so I think I'm good there.

The main fact in all of this that I see is that Sylvia Browne is including this sort of talk in her books in the first place! Defending herself in a "spiritual" self-help book is a sign of desparation as well as completely opposite of Novus' teachings to never defend that which doesn't need to be defended. As usual, Sylvia and her followers believe that if Sylvia wrote it, then it is true so I guess she felt she needed her truth published to keep the sheep in line.

It's really not hard to bring her down...she's got more gaffe's than she's got good so as long as we keep our eyes open and keep it on the top of the search engines until Robert's back on his feet, we won't skip a beat.

Buy a second-hand copy!! That way none of your money goes to her.

A second hand copy might be hard to find right now if it is a new release. Borrowing one might be an option or are her books in the public library?

Yikes, I hope they're not in libraries, but I don't know... I was surprised, though, to see that the Amazon listing does already include 'used' copies (perhaps remaindered?).

Highlights from that listing include the notable tome's sales ranking (144,176), and its tags ("keyword that's strongly related to this product", as Amazon helpfully says): "Pseudoscience". Hahahaha! Someone's doing something right!

Interesting to see that the listings for what people bought along with that book are all other Sylvia tomes. Nothing else.

ETA: Big welcome, Beeg Seestor, & other associated Lancastrians! We're all thinking of you. M.

Well, she's giving away a free reading-maybe that'll drum up business for her: http://www.spiritnow.com/
:D

(Not sure if that is a new or an old site...checked the Wayback Machine, but it can find no cached pages for that address. Hmmm...)

Coincidentally, I just noticed that on Sylvia Browne's own web site, she actually does appear to be giving away a free reading. Win a free reading with Sylvia Browne or $25 off a reading with Chris, it says. Call for more information. Interesting.

I would love a "I am one of Slyvis Brown's Dark Entities" T shirt. I would wear it with pride.

I also see that Sylvia is getting heavily into Conspairacy Theory crap with her last (at least I think it's her last, she churns them out so fast) book, which was rehash of standard Conspiracy crap. This might be another tactic to keep the Brown Kool Aid Drinkers from waking up.

Robert and I were going to have t-shirts made for TAM6 - his would've said "Dark Entity," and mine would've said "I'm with Dark Entity." We just never got around to it. I thought it would be fun to wear them to the Sylvia show, but he said no way. We would've just worn them at a TAM party or something.

Thanks for this, exM! I was sent a couple of her newer books while I was in hospital, but I don't think this was one. Oh, darn. :(

The way Robert tells it she actually said, "Someone will be dealing with you." I doubt she could twist that into a psychic prediction about his health unless she wants her fans to believe she's got evil forces at her command or the ability to curse people.
and she is on record many times as saying that there are n such things as hexes or curses.

You're welcome. :) Maybe we can find it used on Amazon by now. At the time I read it, it had just come out and I refused to buy it.

Except she does say the mother goddess Azna she believes in takes care of the people who worship her and that she's jealous and has a temper. I wouldn't be surprised if her inner circle doesn't think that's what happened with you, though I'm not sure she'd say that in public.

This is the one thing I find that is hard for many critical thinkers to understand, and I can't understand why they can't understand it.

People will believe what they want to believe regardless of what evidence there is to show them that what they believe is wrong.

It's very hard to overcome a lifetime of experience with those beliefs, and most people just don't want to.

That may very well be true (for varying degrees of true) but do we just give up?

History shows there is progress toward rationality. It is slow and civilization often slips back. But it is there.

Expose the truth to people and a small % will be convinced every year. That is what the stopsylvia site has shown. Convincing a population that religion is not above question can take several generations.

I don't believe in giving up. If people don't want to hear it they should just be left alone.

I don't know how to explain this without sounding contradictory or wishy-washy, but I also believe people do have the right to their beliefs and to be themselves, even if it is one that can not be confirmed or truly justified. As long as they're not eating the entrails of children I really don't see the problem.

Of course, I also have problems with conformity and popular belief too.
