Sylvia Browne Going Down

Is their a public car park where people going to the show would use? If so be at the entrance. Get there at least 60 minutes before the show starts.

If you want to disrupt the show there are far more effective means than booing. Cannot mention them as they are all illegal to say the least and may not win any followers.

They why do them?

You cannot fight Sylvia Browne in a way that is illegal. You'll wind up being no better than she is, you'll find yourself in a world of legal hurt, not to mention that you'll tarnish JREF and its mission, given that you've already mentioned what you'll be doing here.

Hand out flyers, yes. Take out ads, yes. Engage people in dialog, yes. But do NOT do something that will smear the rest of us.

I hate to be the one to say this, but...

Let it go.

Seriously, your chances of doing anyone any good are as close to nil as makes no odds, because you're targeting the wrong people at the wrong time. Imagine a bible-thumper or new age fruitcake handing out flyers at TAM or heckling one of the speakers, telling us all we're a bunch of bitter, closed-minded cynics. If you go through with your plan, you become that guy. Suddenly you are one of those annoying wankers who shows up at some event (which people are expending money and effort to attend), and then against all reason, tries to change people's minds about the very thing that brought them all there. The militant feminists at a porn convention, the Jesus freaks at Mardi Gras, Fred Phelps at a gay pride parade... that's who you become. The only difference is that you happen to have objective reality on your side. Unfortunately, people to whom that matters wouldn't be going to see Sylvia Brown to begin with.

Best case scenario: you make a spectacle, everyone immediately hates you and dismisses anything you have to say, and afterward they all feel even more validated in their beliefs because, once they calm down, they get to unite in the solidarity of their pity for the miserable, unenlightened naysayer. Worst case scenario: same as the above, with the addition of your being assaulted and/or arrested.

I hate being the wet blanket, but not as much as I hate seeing creative energy go to waste.

Anything you do to disrupt will serve her cause and cause more people to believe in her.

They want you there.

There are people around who hand out pamphlets asking you to buy there product. Be one of those guys. Do not be too near one of the entrances to the door. Do it in such a way that people put it in their pockets to read later.

Include references like several web sites for people to explore. Maybe there is nothing much but web site addresses. I can imagine one like
Win a million dollars - Visit
http://www.randi.org/ to find out how.

You have to be careful or you will prove that Quinn is an optimist

Wow sounds like a blast to me I dont have a problem with any of that. Whats the big deal with an old fashioned BOO. It wont change the world but it wont end it either.

Im thinking of doing business cards instead of pamphlets. Easier to carry and hand out. Easier for someone to pocket and take home. I can carry tons of them and leave them in the bathrooms and other common areas. Just a few bullet points and some websites.

Maybe I should list general skeptic sites instead of anti-browne ones so it doesnt look like a personal attack. On the other hand people tend to think "sure there are fake ones but she is real".

See if you can wrangle a cream pie in her face. Then tell the audience she should have seen it coming.

Nice fantasy, but impractical.

M.

I have to agree with Quinn on this one - I don't see a major 'victory' for common sense and skepticism here by being belligerent or confrontational at a Sylvia Browne session.

I admire the spirit - but what about applying some more of your initiative and creativity and doing something that may make people stand up and think?

Off the top of my head - A TV series featuring a hitherto unknown psychic cold-reader who does four or five incredible sessions of cold-reading and similar fakery and then on episode 6 - the big reveal that it was all a fake? A psychic/skeptic 'Jamie Kennedy Experiment' type of program. Financial support for a bigger-scale initiative is probably easier to come by in the long run, and the impact is much more tangible.

I don't see much 'win' in your proposals apart from some minor disruption - but no big gain or winning of hearts and minds.

Thats not as much fun. I might be starting school on that day so I dont know if I will be able to attend the actual show anyhow. I am still working on a plan to pamphlet the convention center before the show as its not that far from the school. I want to do something, so far here is my plan.

Generate some business cards with quick facts yet to be determined and a link to a site I will create. I might target it at psychics in general instead of Sylvia. The site will contain links to informational sites about Sylvia and psychics in general. I want to create my own link site so I can track the number of visitors and see how well it worked.

I will place the cards in bathrooms, vending areas, and visitor information stands approx one hour before the show. If I am starting school thats about all I can do.

Heres a suggestion regarding the pamphlets. To make it wasier to get people to take them put a nice big color pic of SB on the front and a title like "The one and only SB." These people have already paid to see her so many of them will be fans and others will/may think you are part of her show giving out free info.

Oh now that's a nice idea! Nice one Ausmerican :)

Business cards could also work - though aren't you tempted by that one, hypeman?

Could make it like a sickening new-agey 'everything's lovely' cover - and even be nicely subtle inside, but with all the right links.

Make sure you'd use a non-copyrighted photo though, or you'll get a great big suing.

I like the business card idea. Add the appropriate websites, and you're good to go. Hell, how can you turn down a business card? You stick it in your pocket, you read it later, and eventually, curiousity gets you to check out that one website, that Randi.Org, and the next thing you know...

It's a lot more subtle than sitting in the audience and booing at her. And, I'll bet, it would be a lot more effective.

Sylvia Browne is coming to my hood next month.

http://www.powerwithin.com/4105/event_calendar_details.asp?event_id=10

Tickets range from $59 to $199 for a 2.5 hour show. You are not gauranteed a reading even with the expensive ticket. They are going to draw random ticket stubs or so they say.

Any ideas on how I can rain on the parade? I wont be able to get inside this time I just cant afford that right now. It's at the same place I BOO'd Ernest Angley http://www.lfplc.net/crusade.htm. I can stand ouside the door and pass out leaflets if somebody can make up a good one, maybe listing all her wrong predictions or some of the outrageous bigfoot/alien stuff. Im looking for some ideas more creative than just pamphletting the victims.

If someone wants to donate the ticket I will BOO her down during a reading and record it like I did at the miracle crusade. It might not be the most professional thing to do but come on you know you want to hear Sylvia get served.

If you want to help and are going to be in the area let me know. As far as I know I am the only one on here in Indiana. Any suggestions are welcome. If you want to help by making up a quality pamphlet I could use the help.

If you want to donate a buck to the BOO Sylvia Fund you can paypal it to kyle@lfplc.net

If I can collect enough donations I will get front row and really lay it on her. All recordings will be posted online for public download just like the Ernest Angley BOO. I have more experience so it should be better this time.

I dont expect to really change any minds but it will make me feel good and who dosent want to hear the old bag get it. But then again maybe it does help the sheep mentality when one of the herd breaks ranks and calls BS. I doubt she has ever been BOO'd during a lecture I wonder how she would react hmmm.

W0rd for being ready to kick her ass, but I'm briefly converting to Christianity so I can tell you to go to HELL for your topic. Thank God I've got good mental blocks.

Sylvia Browne?????????????? Going Down????????????????

I got a real bad image in my head!

I don't know if it is possible in your area, but what about a local TV ad? I would be willing to chip in for that. Maybe there is a city magazine that would do an article? I know the newspapers aren't helping, but maybe you could find an eager college student to publish in their magazine? The Ad idea is a good one too. I bet 200 bucks would buy you a decent size ad in the paper.

I have to go against the pamphlet idea. Trying to give people literature condemning Sylvia before a show they just spent their hard earned dollars on is like calling them all idiots. Even if its true, nobody will admit it to themselves at that point. I would try to reach your community BEFORE the event and before they spend their money on BS. Once they buy the ticket, they aren't going to miss the show and Sylvia gets her money either way.

There is a local new age type paper I could put an ad in with a link to a website. The website for the paper is nuvo.net the back page is usually covered with "safe sex get paid" type of ads so it cant be that expensive. Its not really a woo paper but tends to draw woo advertisers.
