In my mind, the most important thing is pointing out all the predictions she's made that never came true. The one I'll always remember was back in the late 90s on Montel when she predicted that next year, the pope would die and be replaced with a black pope. Ah, good times. It never came true, by the way...

And of course, the miners thing is a good one too.
 
Sorry to join this a little late, but as you're talking about passing out flyers, why not make it something a little fun for the audience members. What about a variation of buzzword-bingo?

I don't know Sylvia's style but I'm guessing she has a bunch of stock phrases along the lines of...

I'm getting an O sound; John, Tom, Bob...
I'm sensing a sister/older man etc
It's may not make sense now but it will do soon.
Was it a "blood disease"

etc.

Before the show it would seem perfectly harmless but during the show it might make a couple of people wonder. Afterwards, maybe they'd want to read the small print where you explain, John/Bob are very common names, everyone knows someone who has a sister etc etc...
 
Sylvia seems to be able to survive just about anything…even if we aim and fire our Q-ray ionizing bracelets at her she will survive.:rolleyes:

Antiquehunter: I agree: What would is needed is mainstream network and cable television attacks against the paranormal. A large flood of real science with credible news people presenting the facts. That seems impossible to when Larry King and Montel and others are profiting. Recently on the “Today” show, two “psychics” were paraded out as being authentic with no attempt to question abilities. Then I thought about the NBC TV lineup and realized the false attempt at presenting news. (the Today show didn't even respond to my email when I protested)

I always try to fight the battle in my classes with some “bad science” lectures—the students enjoy the diversion and it does have a benefical effect. My favorite subjects are Sylvia, John Edward and—of late—Kevin Trudeau. I can’t bend all minds, but I have a student that can do John Edward better than John Edward. I always have some student claim to know a psychic with some anecdote that is meaningless.

I'm liking the idea of a TV show... A bit like the masked magician... Teach some actors how to cold read etc, and go out and sting people... Something different each show - Homeopathy, tarot, astrology, necromancy... Bill it as 'proving the supernatural' or something...

/me is going to bring this up at the next magic club meeting...
 
How about this....rather than giving out anti-Browne stuff, wearing a nice suit and looking respectable, go up and down the line of waiting people acting as though you're a "spotter" for Sylvia, saying something like "Do you plan to have a reading? If so, Sylvia sometimes needs a little help. Who would you like her to contact? What was their name and how did they die?", etc. If real employees see what you're doing and try to run you off, act like you're a newbie employee "Was I too obvious? I thought that's what she told us to ask."

The problem with that is that you can only talk to a few people. Remember you will only have 60 minutes maximum to do anything. Even a 2 minute talk will mean you are only talking to 30 people. If heaps of people overhear you then it may be obvious you are a fake. Great idea if you had more time.

In the same 60 minutes you could hand out 100's of flyer's. Just do it as far away from theater as possible but close enough so that many people gong to the show get one.

What Skrinker is implying is that you hand out something that has all Sylvia's stock phrases. You could put them in the rear of toilet doors 2 hours or more before the show starts. Do not forget both men's and women's toilets.

Exactly, I think most people, especially psychic fans, would take more notice of a successful prediction than some kind of grumpy post-analysis of a reading. eg Sylvia will contact a spirit called "John", Sylia won't name any spirits with foreign names. etc

If you can therefore get someone to be thinking critically about Sylvia's exact words as she's actually saying them, you might find they remember more misses than hits.
 
I used to trust this lady and think she was real. i can't imagine how she can get so many things wrong and people still trust her. She seems to make 100 or more predictions a year which only a few come true (luck i think) and the rest are erased.
I do think she has a small psychic ability. I mean she has done some incredible things. I just think she cant predict anything. I dont know where reading someone and the future mixes, but if it does, then it must be impossible for her to do either?
I remember when she predicted that Al Gore would be president. Wrong ha.
and also she did say Michael Jackson would be found guilty. I am a MJ supporter and used to like Sylvia a bit and then she said something like that. A psychic should be able to see who Michael really is right? he isnt the wacko the media shows him to be. anyways thats a whole other topic.
I have hope that some of the things she says is true, if not, many poeple are in danger. Each person that goes onto the Montel Williams show is in danger if they trust her. Especially with the health problems. I even known a person who i really do think has some small psychic abilities because everything he told me has came true so far (small things such as MJ being not guilty and president bush being re elected and some personal health things that he got right) and he didnt charge and isnt money hungry. More of a friend. Even he thinks sylvia is insane! which is really funny!

If sylvia is really a psychic and wasnt to help others, She wouldnt charge so damn much for a reading! she may be high in demand but dang, $200+ for a phone reading which lasts maybe 30 minutes if your lucky! thats crazy!
if you bring that up to her she'll say she has staff she has to support. HA
I like Montell Williams alot also. I think he stands for alot and helps people, but for him to have her on his show is making me confused because if a person like him really wants to help people, why have her? I doubt very many people watch the "sylvia browne wednesdays" anymore. Especially after she keeps getting things wrong right after another.
Since she is so money hungry, you'd think she'd go for that $1,000,000. I mean thats alot of money she can get without taken advantage of desperate people.
A real psychic and a person who really wants to help people would NOT base their powers around money. She just takes advantage of desperate people and not to mention the rich (i dont feel sorry for rich people who want to blow their money on stupid stuff)
ha if you goto her site at any time you'll see an ad that says something like "cruise the caribbean with Sylvia!" haha that should say it all.
 
'A small psychic ability' means having the same amount as you and I. None whatever.

As you say she gets a few right by pure luck and those are the ones people remember. The rest are forgotten. In short, I have just proved that she has a 100% success rate. Hence her followers.

Nope, sorry. I'm not going to donate a single penny if it's going to end up in Sylvia's pocket. You can boo all you like, but if you've bought a ticket, she still has your money and she still wins. Not only that, but I would imagine that she could probably find a way to have you arrested after her bouncers throw you out of her audience. She wins again. And, of course, she will simply cut your boo-ing out of her film footage. She wins a third time.

I like the protest idea better. Try your best to get the media involved.

What like? I can't think of anything whatsoever that I've seen Sylvia do that's been remotely impressive, thought-provoking or even interesting. Nothing whatsoever. So I'm wondering what it was she did that you thought was 'incredible'?

Welcome, by the way :) Sounds like you have a sceptical streak, but at least some kind of belief in the paranormal - interesting position.

Grinch, in order for me to believe this woman, or anyone else for that matter, has anything resembling "psychic" abilities, the success rate would have to be well over 50%, on a VERY consistent basis. And I don't mean based on her cold reading techniques.

If I were allowed to test, I would have ten people, all of whom had lost a relative within the past five years. I would then have another ten who had not. The first test would involve Sylvia or any other psychic identifying the ten who had lost relatives. This would require 100% accuracy in order for me to consider going on to the next test. Considering the abilities claimed, this should be a cakewalk, but I'm not holding my breath.

If she managed to pass this phase, I would then take ten envelopes, ask each person to write a question down which only the decedent would know the answer to. It would be placed in the envelope, sealed not only with the envelope's glued back but taped with red cellophane to insure that there was no cheating.

The envelopes would be shuffled, and one by one, held up. The psychic would then be required to answer the question listed WITHOUT knowing the contents of the envelope. The answer would be written on the face of the envelope. After this test, the envelopes would be opened, and the answers read aloud. A better than 50% pass rate would be required in order to be conclusive.

My guess? Maybe one or two might hit, but I doubt it.

Considering Sylvia's "accuracy," I don't even think she'd do that well. Don't even ask about James Van Praagh, or John Edward. (Considering that 20/20 put him to the test, and he COMPLETELY bombed out, I doubt they'd even get one or two right on the first test.)

I agree. A psychic ought to be able to do as well as the late Johnny Carson did: "The answer is a rock in your shoe, Mr. Allen, and Mr. Jackson. And the question is...'Name a peeve, a Steve, and a deve."

Facts about psychic medium :

1) If the dead person they are supposedly talking to was a Nobel Prize winner such as Einstein, Feynman, Bohr, Schrodinger, etc... Those intelligent intellectuals will talk to the medium in a stuttering way. By this observational fact, you can infer that dead people are ALL stutters.

2) An English physic medium can ONLY have an audience with english names. Similar to other languages as well. If an English psychic say, have a Chinese audience whom they were all born in the US and speak fluently English but their names would still be Chinese, it is a 100% guarantee that every names would be a miss for the psychic, because she/he not familiar with Chinese names.

3) Generalization statement and quite vaque.

4) Cannot find any missing persons.

5) ...blah , blah, blah, ...

It would be very interesting to get someone with unusual heritage (say, Mongolian or Kazakhstani) to get a 'reading' with any of these people. It'd put someone like Sylvia, or Gordon Smith ("UK's most accurate medium") through their paces.

I'm getting someone whose name begins with an obscure clicking sound...
