I really don't know why I am bothering, but in the Northern Hemisphere, outside the Tropics and the Arctic Circle the Sun rises in the East, and sets in the West, just as in the Southern Hemisphere, outside the Tropics and Antarctic Circle.

However in these regions of the Northern Hemisphere the Sun appears to travel clockwise (i.e when the sun is at its highest, at local noon, it is due South). In the Southern Hemisphere outside the Tropics and Antarctic Circle, the Sun appears to travel anticlockwise, so at local noon, the Sun is due North.

The think is that you can easily see this for yourself by visiting a temperate country in the opposite hemisphere to the one where you live and noting the apparent movement of the Sun during the day.

Whereas someone who thinks that a bullet fired horizontally will vary in the time it takes to hit the ground depending on muzzle velocity clearly lives in an embarrassment free zone.

To be fair, if the bullet is fast enough, then he is right. One way of thinking about orbital velocity is that with an orbiting projectile, the Earth's surface falls away at the same speed as the projectile falls towards it.

That model is trivially false: observers in South America, Southern Africa and Australia would all look in completely different directions when they each look South. But in the real world when they each look South they can see the same constellations.

It's very simple, if the Sun is at zenith 2,500 miles up and 6,000 miles away it should be setting, it cannot possibly be a flat Earth. It cannot be a flat Earth because the Sun at that height and distance forms a 21 degree angle. If you claim perspective makes it disappear, how come it doesn't.

If the sun was directly overhead at noon, then six hours later it would be on the horizon and setting. But on your flat earth it wouldn't be on the horizon at all. It would be about 6,000 miles away and 2,500 miles up, so it should be more than 20 degrees above the horizon.

Indeed it is silly to say the earth is rotating at 1,000 mph. It's approximately true for points on the equator, but increasingly wrong at higher latitudes. And I'm amused by Daniel's stressing the three sixes in 66,600 mph and 66.6° as if it were a portent of anything.
