Stress?

OK, really, most is already covered. Still:

Stress is a condition that helps us cope with a crisis. It is a complex condition involving hormones and a number of physiological conditions (pulse, blood pressure, digestion, immune response).

In the stressed condition, the body optimizes our short-term survival, making us more fit for fight, or flight. Energy is directed from digestion, growth, even the brain, to the muscles, the senses, the ability to cope with wounds.

All this happens at the cost of our long-term survival, which makes sense, because if we don't cope with the crisis (survive it), long-term does not exist. So, in a crisis, stress is beneficial.

However, if the stressed condition persists for a longer period (weeks, months), our body wears down, like an engine running at full boost for too long. Then stress becomes damaging.

Contradicting habit, one sided approach etc. can make one to think & express in odd language. First try to be equanimious. Do you mean that there is no such condition as "acute stress"?

Kumar, this a good example of your dishonest style of discussion, I said that your use of the words 'rest' and 'relaxation' was my issue with you abusing language. So you asking about stress is a strong sign of your dishonesty.

So when will you stop bending language? I called you out on your use of the terms rest and relaxation and you try deploying a strawman.

That makes you disingenuine at best and dishonest at worst. Equanimity has been tried by me with you, it is your dishonesty and game playing that bother me.

What is antonym of stress?

I have already given a general definition of stress, and can give a good one of acute stress. But there is not going to be an antonym of stress, because it depends on the use of the term stress. If you want to go with the general definition of stress as a state of physical depletion due to extended periods of arousal, then the antonym would be : Not being in a state of physical depletion due to extended periods of arousal.

Your philosophical need for black and white polar opposites is yours, reality is multifaceted and falls along continuums.

Hello Mr hans,

Yes but I am also trying to better understand about opposite of stress--rest & chronic rest.

Normal condition. Stress moves us from normal (you are going to like this:) balanced condition, to an unbalanced condition.

Hans

Thanks for remembering my liking.:) If it is normal condition, what is rest & relax?

Do you want to say that rest or relax do not exist in physiology?

There is no condition that is opposite of stress. Stress is a deviation from the normal condition.

A deviation from normal condition that is in the opposite direction of stress is, of course, a calm, restful condition, like meditation, but they are not complementary.

Rest and relaxation is also part of the normal condition. Just like normal activity.

Hans

Actually, I was thinking of posting "requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei" ("chronic rest grant unto him, Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him").

Hmmm, perpetual light shining on you, sounds like torture.
Must be quite stressful after a while.

Then, what will be impact of staying chronically in normal condition without stress?

Btw, what are normal and abnormal(stressful, resting etc.) position of a pendulum?
