Stress is a condition that helps us cope with a crisis. It is a complex condition involving hormones and a number of physiological conditions (pulse, blood pressure, digestion, immune response).
In the stressed condition, the body optimizes our short-term survival, making us more fit for fight, or flight. Energy is directed from digestion, growth, even the brain, to the muscles, the senses, the ability to cope with wounds.
All this happens at the cost of our long-term survival, which makes sense, because if we don't cope with the crisis (survive it), long-term does not exist. So, in a crisis, stress is beneficial.
However, if the stressed condition persists for a longer period (weeks, months), our body wears down, like an engine running at full boost for too long. Then stress becomes damaging.
