Yep. We taped on a Thursday when we were there and found out from the driver that "it" had been there the day before. :(

At this time, the mother has still not responded to my email.

To Elaine: When we almost had the op to go on the show with her, I felt like I'd be selling my soul. I was relieved when they chose someone else. I did not want to have to make that decision, and that was long before I knew all the things I do now. We ended up on a show that had nothing to do with her or other psychics. It was straightforward and professionally handled.

Sounds like it would have been a very difficult decision. Like you said, good thing you didn't have to make it.

It might be useful to get transcripts of the TV programmes.

I didn't know who she was untill I saw her on TV when on holliday recently. A woman asked how her boyfriend died and she said he was shot in the chest. The woman looked shocked and said no, he collapsed and there was no sign of bullets holes or such injury in the autopsy. The medium then tried to say that it was "like" bullets hitting him in the chest (i.e, as if the injury was just "similar" to being shot).

What the heck was that supposed to mean?

The clip is here. It's the parents asking about their daughter.

Wow.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but... wow.

What a great example of Sylvia and Montel doing everything they can to force a failed guess to fit the actual circumstances.

That must appear somewhere on the website, CS!

This sounds like a great project and if I can help in any way let me know and I'll do what I can.
I appreciate that, marcais.

How long ago was this, Kelly?

Already working on it, mgdwcb![/QUOTE]

Okay, I'll tell CS! ;)

It's already on my list! It was brought to my attention several days ago by the webmaster of the "Bad Psychics" site.

I'm getting lots of support and encouragement like that from all over. I can't tell you how great that is.

Well, this is kind of interesting:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/02/12/BAG7P4V6AF1.DTL

A coroner's examiner, Dr. Judy Melinek, told Nic's mother that a tape of the game showed a blow to Nic's chest that could have broken the heart's rhythm and triggered a condition known to kill young athletes on rare occasions, his mother said earlier this week.

So it could have been a blow to the chest. The question is, would something like this show up in an autopsy? Also, wouldn't she have died very soon after the accident?

In any case, the video shows Sylvia guessing that she might have died from toxic shock syndrome. The problem is that TSS leaves very obvious sympoms and it takes a while to die from it. It would have shown up in the autopsy so this was a bad guess on Sylvia's part.

If the blow was hard enough to crack ribs or bruise tissue, it could show up during autopsy. And, yes, it would have been almost instaneous; it is like anti-CPR.

2 emails later, and the mother has still not responded to my inquiry about their upcoming Montel taping.

Our taping was in November of 2004. You might be interested in this story about what she was up to the day before we taped. Note the reporter who interviewed her. If he still works at that station, I am sure he would talk about it. (Unfortunately, the video of that interview is no longer online.)

I got to read some of Sylvia's book Phenomenon today. It is the antithesis of the Skeptic's Dictionary, or as I said in chat "an encyclopedia of crap." It is set up just like a encyclopedia, with entries in alphabetical order. I'm going from memory (maybe I can ask to borrow the book)

* Uri Geller is legit because Randi can't prove Uri didn't use trickery to bend the spoons.

* Elves (not Elvis you wiseacres), Fairies, the Boogeyman and Extra-terrestrials all exist

* But zombies and vampires don't. Neither do curses.

* There exists "Dark Entities". I guess those are people who fight their former teacher on a molten lava planet, only to lose both legs and an arm. They get to wear all black and sound like James Earl Jones. I could be wrong about this. I only skimmed the book.

I finally heard back from the mother in regards to the Montel Show. The show changed their mind and is not having them on, however, the mother admitted it was to be a SB segment. :(

I gave her a few facts about SB and told her she should be glad it wasn't that, and since the show said they will have her on at a different time, maybe it will be a straighforward segment like ours, which is a million times better.

But, if she is right, they may be taping a SB show with new victims this Wednesday.

I finally got around to watching a Montel show I recorded a week or two back in which the show started with a woman describing her attacks of sleep paralysis. Rather than give the scientific explanation of what was happening to the poor woman, Sylvia referred to the condition as Catatonia-something or other (I deleted the show, should've wrote the term down. Sorry). She explains to the woman that this is a common out-of-body experience, and how the sufferer is on a different astal level while this is happening.

I have no reason to write this other than the fact that this sleazy person is making millions off of people in need of proper help, and her false comfort attracts more and more followers every day, regardless of how many mistakes she makes. It bothers me.

Hand to rant a bit. Carry on.

I wonder why they changed their minds? It's tempting to think that Sylvia couldn't find enough info on them for hot reading purposes. Or perhaps it was just TV - the family didn't have the right kind of heart-tugging photos or something.

Pure speculation on my part.

Bother me too, grayman.

In suspect that location and cost is the reason, as the family is from western Canada, I believe. The missing girl is a pretty, and that sells, at least per the media, so I'm sure they have a chance at a show down the road. I just hope it's not with SB.

I saw that same epsiode and it pissed me off just as much. This was one of the rare occasions where I found myself shouting at the television. Although, I find myself doing it more and more whenever Sylvia's on Montel.

BTW, she called it "astral cadalepsy"(sp?like it matters). Funny you don't here more about this condition in today's leadng medical journals.

I think we ought to start a huge letter writing campaign to Montel to get her off his show. You'd have to have a large number of people doing it, otherwise it'd be like a mosquito buzzing in his ear.

I think that ratings and advertising dollars are much stronger than a few dozen letters from skeptics. I don't necessarily believe that Montel falls for Sylvia's schtick. Maybe he does, but the fact that he has her on his show does not, in and of itself, support the claim that he believes in her. He's a business man who knows the value of her appearance on his show.

I agree. (sigh)

I guess I will always have hopes that someone will take the high road over the almighty dollar.

Montel is an intelligent man. You'd think he would have wised up, especially since he gets to see all the unedited garbage. But, again, money rules for some people.
